Am I insane?

Or is it normal to go and buy a box of Speer Gold Dot 9mm's on your 21'st birthday? The alcohol thing, yeah, that's all well and good, but I'm more excited about being able to give my Jericho a proper meal.

Is this normal?

Also, what did you fellas get on your 21'st, ammo and/or handgun wise?

I bought a bottle of champagne and a Ruger MK 2. That was many, many moons ago.

October 10, 2007, 05:33 AM
I didn't do anything like that for my birthday. I was low on cash at the time. I bought some cheap beer a few weeks later. Nothing special.

October 10, 2007, 06:09 AM
Good thing to do. It expresses your legal adulthood. Take charge of your life.

October 10, 2007, 06:42 AM
you are insane...only one box?

October 10, 2007, 07:38 AM

Thankfully, nothing. All my friends came over when I got off work (as a bartender, no less.) I got home to find them all there and several bottles of Tequilla.

I woke up face-down on the front lawn (and haven't had a sip of tequilla since.)

Firearms in that mix would have been a really, really, bad, bad thing.

(Now I don't drink)

I went out and bought a Colt, one of their semi-custom 1911s.

I went for a beer, but my DL had expired (it was past midnight) so the doorman would not let me in. I went down the street, got in another bar, had a beer and then got my DL renewed the next day.:D

I went to a gunshow over an hour away from my home, bought a keltec, came back home, went to the range, bought some .380 hydrashock ammo, shot it and some other guns, and then went back home, packed those up and my folks took me to a steak dinner.

I did NOT wake up with a hangover.

October 10, 2007, 08:00 AM
All I got on my 21st was a sore back from driving a Military 5-ton Dumptruck all day long. From about 3 am untill 6 pm non stop 2 mile round trip I drove and drove and drove. I had some bloody knuckles that day from learning to shift the truck. Other than that and getting a big meal not a darn thing. We had a levey break and they called my guard unit to fix it and quick before it washed a guys dairy cows down the river.

October 10, 2007, 08:02 AM
didn't get a handgun on my 21st (because I couldn't do it legally), but I signed up for my pistol permit class.

October 10, 2007, 08:15 AM
I already owned a couple rifles and pistols and lived in off-base housing. So I did the beer thing.

October 10, 2007, 09:23 AM
Nope not nuts, when I turned 18 first thing I bought was a Henry .22

When I turned 22 I hit a local tobaccanist for a box of CAO Black, my favorite cigars, bought a bottle of Remy Martin XO (I'd been saving up for this awhile lol) and went in and picked up my Mosin Nagant 91/30 Sniper repro. Went out to the range, came home for dinner, sat after dinner had a cigar and some of the Cognac, woke up for work the next morning, still have about half the bottle sitting on a shelf, special toasting drink really.

The pistol bug hasn't bitten me just yet although I find myself looking at the Mauser Broomhandle pistols more and more lately

October 10, 2007, 09:29 AM
Bought a Firestrorm 1911 (long story) and went home and put it tin my gun safe.

Went to every bar that I could ever drink at before (pretty much only at restaurants I had worked at that knew I wasn't 21 yet) and got mah drank on.

Bless the wife for being the DD for me and some drunken buddies.

Bless Grand Mariner for never, ever giving me a hangover.

But you're right.... I cared more about being able to buy a handgun rather than being able to buy alcohol.

October 10, 2007, 09:34 AM
:uhoh: EEEHhhh I don't remember....:D I was probably drunk.. But I know for sure I didn't do the gun thing.

It may sound funny, but I don't remember a thing about my 21st birthday, so couldn't tell you what I did, if anything.

I'd already been out on my own since I was 17, and had several rifles, shotguns, and handguns... and alcohol was never difficult to get no matter what age I was.

So all in all, I suppose turning 21 was a non-event. *shrug*

Neh, guns we have :D

Went to the Iron Hill (gourmet-ish fare and microbrew beer), got served at 11:30 the night before. Very disappointing. A good lesson on situational awareness, though: Every time I turned around, my beer glass was full again. And shots showed up, from nowhere.

Now, I turned 21 on a sunday - by monday I'd slept it off and was there at the courthouse in time to get my permit application when it opened..

I now know that one can get some temporary amusement from alcohol, but a gun is a much better investment in terms of pleasure per dollar!

October 10, 2007, 10:23 AM
I plan on getting a handgun on my 21st. I'll probably buy alcohol too (don't worry, no drinking 'till the guns are put away).

October 10, 2007, 10:47 AM
Only had a deer rifle at that time.

October 10, 2007, 10:52 AM
I was much more excited about being able to buy guns and ammo than I was about getting a drink. Much more. I had the pistol picked out. I do not drink at all anymore,(24 yrs) but I shoot as much as ever, if not more. I am a gun junkie I guess. :D

By the way. I already had a 1911 and a drink (not together) by the time I was 17. ;)

Time to resurrect the ATF photos :)

The perfect 21st birthday.......

October 10, 2007, 10:56 AM
Picked up my SA 1911a1 in Glenwood, IL--waited out the three days prior to my B-day (maybe IL can close that loophole now, just in case another young gun nut might use it).

Makes much more sense than cellebrating one's majority by getting falling down sick and drunk (yes, I did that too, and had dinner with friends at The Berghoff--a good birthday all around).

Happy Birthday and be careful!

Are you insane for buying a box of pistol ammo on your 21st birthday? Absolutely! As another poster pointed out, for buying just ONE box!

When I hit the big 2-1, I'm not sure I'll even be able to afford a pistol or anything.

October 10, 2007, 11:04 AM
No, you're not insane. When I was 19, the drinking age dropped to 18 or 19. So, I was able to have a drink say with my pizza if I wanted. Then, after a few months, the principals' association in Michigan raised Hades because students were coming to school after legally drinking. :neener: Age went back up to 21, and for a year and a half I couldn't buy a drink...again. That is insane. It's fun not being told by big brother what to do, isn't it? :D

Hey TR:

That's a cool pic...pass me a cigar....pllleeeeeeease. :(

October 10, 2007, 11:55 AM
Happy Birthday!

On my 21st birthday, I was standing Guard Duty on Okinawa eight days after 9/11. I was restricted from purchasing or imbibing in alcohol until after the New Year.

October 10, 2007, 12:00 PM
Hah, you can get handgun ammo basically anywhere if you're over 18... if you say it's for a rifle (carbine).

I'm not advocating dishonesty, I'm 20 and buy 9mm ammo for my carbine all the time.

October 10, 2007, 12:01 PM
I'm not advocating dishonesty, I'm 20 and buy 9mm ammo for my carbine all the time.

You can do it truthfully enough, there are very few of the major handgun rounds that have not been put into some kind of rifle along the way.....

October 10, 2007, 12:07 PM
It wasn't EXACTLY on my 21st birthday, but I bought a Series 70 Colt, my first handgun, which I still have.

October 10, 2007, 12:11 PM
I picked up 3 - 100rd boxes of 9mm for the glock 17 my old man saw fit to give me on the day, and a bottle of Crown Royal. Im sure the clerk at Wally World thought something was wrong with me as I came through the line.

Shot through all the rounds when we got home, and dad and a few buds of mine polished off the bottle later that night around the fire. I had a good

On my 21st, I left the driver's license office with my still warm ID and headed to my favorite gun shop. I had been eyeing a certain Ruger Police Service-Six .357 Mag. in the used case for months. It was a blued, 4" model that looked like it had fired about 12 rounds its whole life. The best part was that it was only $185, and they threw in a 50 round box of Win Super-X 158 gr. JHPs as well. It shoots very well, and my dad is keeping it on "permanent loan" as his mountain lion gun. Drinking came on the next weekend!

October 10, 2007, 12:24 PM
Sounds fine to me :)

On my 21st, I went and bought some wine at midnight, and went downtown and applied for my CCW the next day (too bad the Sheriff's office was closed on Sunday ;))

October 10, 2007, 12:32 PM
When I was 21.... 18-year-olds could drink;). When I was about two months from 21 I went to my favorite gun emporeum, Oshmans and put a Ruger Speed-Six (.357) in layaway and got it out on my birthday.

October 10, 2007, 12:34 PM
On my 18th, I went and bought ammo for my .22s, my shotgun, and my .30-30. I didn't have enough money to buy a gun.

On my 19th, I bought a Mosin-Nagant and ammo.

On my 21st, I plan to buy a .22 pistol and a full-power handgun. Haven't figured out which yet, though.

Oh, and on my 20th, I plan to buy a nice AK.

October 10, 2007, 12:35 PM
On my 21st birthday I bought a CZ75. I didn't go out to a bar until the next day and even then I didn't drink because I didn't like anything. My friends think I'm boring haha

I've desperately wanted a handgun since I was 18, but on my 21st I had round about 35 dollars. I didn't want my first gun to be a Lorcen that had already been used to kill somebody, so I held off.

Fast forward a year and a half, I'm heading out to buy 500rds of .45 so I can shoot my week-old Kimber for the first time. Good things come to those who wait.

i remember getting a ruger p-85 (9 mm) on my 21st.

after drinking heavily.

October 10, 2007, 02:42 PM
SW1911 and about 250rds of ball ammo. Applied for the carry permit a few days later.

I can't buy .22 rounds from academy, for some odd reason. Seems like I was going to be using them in a pistol, which would be a no-no given my age at the time (18). I calmly mentioned that the T/C on the back wall behind him comes in a .308, as well as a pistol version. That's right, the same .308 I'm buying this day at this store. He just kinda stood there, reiterated that he couldn't let me have a brick of .22, and so I shrugged it off and didn't buy anything.

On my 21st, I plan on buying a nice handgun (to compliment my two CZs and two S&Ws... God bless nice parents who sign for things :) ), a few hundred rounds, and sign up for a CHL class.

October 10, 2007, 04:22 PM
Also, what did you fellas get on your 21'st, ammo and/or handgun wise?
Wheelgun and a 250rd pack of UMC .38 Special. Saw and shot a snake as soon as I got home. Didn't do any drinking - personal preference only. Get more than one box of ammo, though. And happy birthday.

Every time I come home with a new gun (just last Friday), I see a snake slithering by (and never see 'em at any other time). Is this my curse for watching Snakes on a Plane?

Go shooting then go out for beers and pizza.

October 10, 2007, 05:29 PM
Yes, yes. I only bought one box of ammo because my roommate's buying in bulk for our CHL practice, haha.

Then I got a six of Guinness for the cleaning rituals after the shoot. I'll be careful not to get pizza grease on the Jericho! I hear tell that bluing really hates grease from deep-fried meat.

October 10, 2007, 05:38 PM
Hey, on my 21st I bought an ancient .22 handgun and still haven't bought alcohol in any way shape or form. Always go back to the basics- if it's crazy and it works it ain't crazy!
