Franchi 612 Doesn't Cycle Birdshot

Ok, so I've got a Franchi 612 as my primary recreational shotgun. With a short barrel and magazine extension, I use it for shooting 3 gun.

Take off the magazine extension, and put a 24 inch, ported barrel on, and it's supposed to be my shotgun for busting clays and bringing down doves.

However, the shotgun has a problem cycling birdshot. Now, here's the weird bit:

The shotgun has not had any problems whatsoever cycling birdshot when the 20 inch barrel is on it. But as soon as I swap it out for the longer barrel, the firearm becomes a single-shot, having problems with extraction.

I've tried reversing the gas cylinder, and that doesn't make a difference. I've tried different kinds of birdshot, notably AA and Estate Heavy Game, and function still is no good.

So, what could cause a shotgun to fail to cycle with one barrel, but not another?

I'm not by any stretch of the imagination any sort of Franchi expert, so here is my entirely un-scientific W.A.G. . . . .

Is this a gas-operated gun, like perhaps the Rem 1100? If so, could be an improperly-sized gas port issue, or the gas seal (mating surfaces) not being properly sized/shaped.

Extraction issue? Is the chamber smooth, clean, and burr-free? Does it work with slighly heavier than target loads? Extractor claw cutouts properly shaped...does it leave the empty shell in the chamber?

HTH...about the only things I can think of, right of the top of my head.
