I'm looking to get my dad a new automatic, and based on his preferences, I don't know what to get him. Here's what he likes.

-A double action/single action with a very light single action trigger and little travel on the single action.
-Smooth double action.
-Barrel of at least 4 inches.
-Magazine capacity of 15ish.
-either a 9 or a 40

I have a p95dc, and yes, it is a sweet gun. The trigger is kind of mooshie for his taste though.

My first thoughts were of a Beretta 92fs, so I'll go w/ that :D

Sounds like a Jericho to me. Figure out if he likes frame-mounted safeties or slide-mounted safety/decockers. If he says frame, I'd recommend a CZ75 or a Browning HP. If slide, Beretta, Baby Eagle, standard Wondernine fare.

Try and narrow it down, the field's wide open at this point.

CZ 75B or Sig P226.

Either gun would be a great choice.

XD .40 - Striker fired with a very nice trigger. 12 rounds. Thats plenty.

CZ 75 should meet his requirements as set out.

I've shot a Beretta 96 brigadier, and I didn't like it. Is the trigger on a 92 the same?

You have exactly described the Sig P226 in 9mm.

Since you haven't mentioned what type of safety you're considering, (slide mounted, decocker, or frame mounted), you might want to consider something like the Taurus 92. You can carry it cocked and locked, (Condition 1), or you can use it double action first shot, by means of the decocker. Gives you a few different options with the same gun.

Go 9mm. Enough stopping power and cheaper ammo. I'm looking to buy a Beretta 90-Two in about a week. I've just heard so many good things about them, so here we go.

Sig P226.
You can get it in either 9mm or .40S&W
If you don't want to spend "Sig" money, look at a CZ75 or a Beretta 92 or 96.

BTW- You are a good son! :)

this gets my vote, i had one and it was a great shooter, and met the crieria and they are very inexpensive. mags are cheap too.
though the p345 trigger is better the p95 makes a great pistol.

I agree with CoRoMo- the Berreta 90-Two is what you are looking for. The 90-two is one of the Best 9mm period. If your Dad prefers a 4 inch barrel have him shoot the SW-MP 9mm he will Love it.:) On that note if he wants a .40 cal you cannot beat the SW-MP I own that .40 and it is the Best .40 I have ever owned! A lot of people do not take into consideration the Taurus 24/7. Taurus makes an Excellent .40 the 24/7 is right up there with the SW. Hope this helps!

The Best to You and Yours!

I suggest that you involve your father in the quest. He's the only one who can determine what feels best to him and what will work for him. You wouldn't buy him a pair of shoes without his input, would you? Handguns are just as personal. Shopping together for a gun is also quality time.

Take a look at the FNP9. Inexpensive, dead reliable, accurate.
