Out for a Stag

Last week I and my colleague Iain, took our German and Dutch friends, Andreas and Marcel out for a stag, as a thank you for the wild boar hunting they kindly provide for us.

We knew they really wanted a red stag (there's precious few in Holland) so we asked a friend to take them out on his land to the North of Arrochar. We do have red on our own ground but not so many that one could be guaranteed. After they had got their stag, we went on to Aberdeenshire where Marcel got a nice little six point roe.

Here are some pictures.

First evening out Andreas got a wee stag.

Next morning both drew a blank but the evening stalk brought success for both.

On the way up.

During our stay at the Village Inn, Arrochar, Guinness sales went through the roof. I'm just glad I didn't have to climb the hill with them.

The rifle used was a 7mm-08 Mannlicher Pro Stainless with a Swarovski 4-16 x 50.

Are you stalking? Using dogs? No blinds it seems.

Unbelievable countryside where Marcel got his shot. Nice looking hunt. Congrats all around.

Looks like perfect country for spot and stalk hunting. I'm sure I'd LOVE it there. :D

It is very open hill (mountain by our standards) country around where the guys shot their red deer. It's a case of spy the ground well to find the animals then stalk into them. It is a sport for a fit man. I am limited now in how much of that type of stalk that I do. Mostly now I walk and stalk in forest and woodland and the woodland edges. BUT, for fit guys (I can remember that far back) it is great!

I am very pleased with the 7mm-08 LAR-15. I have not had it for very long and though it performed well on the range, that trip was its practical test. Passed with credits!!

7mm/08 is definitely an excellent cartridge for lightweight guns

Where in Germany are you UK Armourer. I will be going to chase pigs near Berlin late November. My Dutch and German friends are each having a custom rifle built by a Brit living near Osnabruck. I will be dropping in to see him with Marcel on the way to Berlin. It's not you is it? As for Scotland? Definitely worth a visit.
