Is this legal to do? Also which folding stocks work on differant ak-47 recievers? i.e. stamped and milled? Does this require any gunsmithing or can I do it myself?

Heck i'll give it a shot tho AKs are'nt really my thang.
AFAIK there are really two bans to be concerned about for AKs, one in 89 mentioned here ATF 89 ban info (http://www.atf.treas.gov/pub/treas_pub/assault_rifles/treasrelease.htm) which aimed at stopping the import of non sporting weapons and the 94 assault weapon ban we all know and love (see ATF FAQ (http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#o1) ) If your rifle was imported after the 89 ban it couldn't have legally been imported with the folder and it would have been illegal to modify an import to have one. If it was imported prior to the 89 ban and was configured into an "assualt weapon" configuration prior to the 89 ban then fold away. Or not what the hell do i know i ain't no lawyer.

If it is a pre-'89 AK, then you are good to go.

It depends on your receiver and what type of folding stock you want to put on it.
