There is a Pedersen Model 4000 (custom model 500) on GunBroker.com, I really don't need another pump, but I'm going to keep an eye on this one....besides, it's for charity, right??
The ornately-engraved receiver for this extraordinary Pedersen Model 4000 has been locked up in the Mossberg vaults for decades waiting for the right occasion to be fitted to presentation-quality wood and made available to a discerning collector. We are honored that Mossberg has selected the Hunting Heritage Trust's "Treasures & Traditions" auction as that special occasion.
The Pedersen Model 4000s were originally produced by Mossberg circa 1975. Noted for bringing a custom-fit and look to customers for competitive prices, the 4000 features an ornate, full-coverage floral engraved receiver, further enhanced with a select American black walnut stock and forearm and a polished, deep blue metal finish.
This 12 gauge features 28-inch barrel and three screw in chokes (full, mod and IC).
Special Thanks to Mossberg for this very Special Donation!

Is that still(!) a plastic safety selector?
I love the 500's....moreso that the BPS, just for reassembly ease if anything.
That is a beautiful engraving- machine or hand? How much do you suspect it will fetch? I'm guessing around $475

Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Look closely---the trigger guard is plastic---the "engraving" is still in an aluminium receiver---and the wood isn't all that special either--seriously--I've seen better wood on standard production Marlin rifles. And well---its just a Mossberg---nothing special or all that good for that matter.
Unless you have a burning desire to support the charity---stay far away from this one---there's still just a pig under the dressing.

Jeez, I didn't know a Mossberg could look that good, though. I know it's just a Mossy. Now, I'd much rather have all that engraving on a sidelock side by side with some class than on what really is a working gun for hard knocks. But, heck, whatever turns ya on. If I bought a show piece side by side I'd leave it in the rack when I went duck hunting and take my Mossberg, sorta how I see the guns, not palates for artists, but working shotguns that get the job done and for not much cost and last a lifetime in the process. It is different, though, I'll give ya that! :D
I don't consider the 500 to be the "pig" that an 870 is. I had a Wingmaster. I'll never own another 870, just don't like 'em, much prefer the 500. In the world of working pump guns, the Mossberg is the ONLY gun for me. Next higher level I'd get a Browning BPS, but I could go auto for the price of the Browning. Pumps are for hard work in hard environments on a budget, way I see it. The Mossberg sure gets the job done and better than the 870 for this southpaw shooter. The ergos are much better and the thing never balks. If the gun works, it works.

I just picked up a NIB BPS Stalker for $329.99 a week ago---not much of a stretch over a Mossberg and waaaay less than an auto.

The BPS has its detractors, say the all steel receiver adds too much weight, slow as Christmas to swing. I, however, see it as a waterfowl gun and weight is good.
That's a good price. I gave 200 for my OEM camo Mossberg nearly 20 years ago. It's had many cases of ammo run though it, mostly 3" steel shot, and it's still going strong, never had a hiccup that wasn't ammo related. It don't like to extract rusty ammo. After one trip to the salt marsh, the ammo gets rusty, so I've modified my method of carrying ammo to keep it up out of the water. That should help, ROFL. Heck, i've spend more time cleaning up ammo than the gun, LOL!
I wouldn't mind a BPS, really like my buddy's BPS, but frankly, I'd go for a Mossberg 935 first. Autos are easier on the old shoulder. And, I'll get camo finish on my next waterfowl gun and plastic stocks like my 500 and a sling like my 500 came with. Wood and blued steel is real pretty out of the box, but take it to the salt marsh for a season and you'll be painting it anyway. I tried waxing my blued guns, not the greatest results. I've kept my Winchester clean, but I had to swim out of a quick sand hole the other weekend teal hunting and soaked my Spartan 20 gauge double I just bought. I could see the rust forming on it before I got back to the van. I had a towel and some WD 40 in the van and thing I nipped it just in time, whew! My cell phone wasn't so lucky, though. I knew better than to take it out there, but I didn't have a watch on to tell when shooting time was.
Nope, the salt marsh ain't no place for a pretty gun. The camo on my 500 has some scratches, but I've been able to keep it pretty rust free for near 20 years now. That finish is more rugged than any blue. Also, I have a lot easier time keeping rust off an aluminum receiver than a steel one. And, plastic trigger guards? Well, it ain't rusted yet and it's not given me any problems and I use the shotgun HARD! Tell ya the truth, though, I don't know that the trigger guard IS plastic, I'll look at it. Is or aint, no matter to me. It's not given me a problem functionally.
You can look down your nose at a Mossberg all ya want, just don't look down the business end of the barrel, because they may not be pretty, but they always work.

Mossberg 930's can be had for about $375-$400.... Oh, that's right, Mossbergs are "pigs"...
