I've been sitting on my 1000 free Hornady 230 grain XTP's for about a year and figured it's finally time to load them up. (45 ACP)

I'd like them to be near the top of the power factor (after adequate buildup/testing of course).

The problem is I'm trying to find a specific loading for this bullet and I don't have access to a Hornady manual. I have Speer & Lyman and the local shops are out.

From my reading it would seem that Universal is a good fit and will get the bullet up around 900fps which is where I'd like to be (or a bit higher). They will be primarily shot from my 4" XD but may also be run through the USPc and 1911.

Anyone care to share a load they use? (COL would be greatly appreciated)

I also have plenty of Bullseye and Clays at home but picked up a pound of Universal today so I'd like to use it.

Max 900 fps loads from Hornady #6:

OAL = 1.230"
Clays Universal = 6.4
VIHT- N-340 = 6.7
Power Pistol = 7.6
SR- 4756 = 8.0
HS-6 = 8.7

No other powders produced 900 fps with a 230 grain bullet.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

I load 6.5 Unique with that bullet, which is 0.4 over Hornady's listed maximum.

8.6 gr of AA#5
1.25 OAL

Will push a 230 gr FMJ our of a 5" barrel at 870 FPS give or take a few.

There are some loads I've used that will push that same 230 gr at 1010 out of a 5" barrel but they're +P and you'll have to look those up for yourself.

I have had great results with AA#5 and before that Unique with 230gr jacketed bullets, when loading Blue Dot w/230gr they worked well for my Marlin Camp carbine and the 1911 Colt, but I don't think BD is your powder? From what you have Universal seems to be a good place to start, I have not tried it, but would like to. Happy loading and shooting jj
