I'd like to coat my old Remington 742 with Brownell's Allumihide II and need to separate the barrel from the receiver. Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

There is a bolt going through the inside of the receiver that bolts into the barrel extension.
Brownell's sells this wrench to get it loose:

on the Remington semi Autos based on this action.
1st: remove the forend, this one weird screw
2nd: in the gas block there is a fairly large roll pin, it has to come out,
3rd:then pull the bolt back, making sure to slide the peice that was held by that roll pin with the block on the action bar.
When the front of the action bar clears the gas tube gently pull the action bar away from the barrel, being aware of the spring that will be released, and when the guide tube is away from the gas block and can be pulled forward, started pulling it forward, when it has moved forward enough, that fore mentioned spring will get loose like a mad slinky on steroids! but being aware of it, it should not get away.
4th: Now you can remove the nut that holds the barrel to the action
5th: pull the barrel out of the frame, turn it 90 degrees and lift it out of the action bar.
If you are going to remove the bolt, there is a small pin right in the back of the bolt handle, it has swadged end and has been put in from the bottom, so it needs to be driven out from the top,
NOW be aware that the left cam pin likes to fall out. the dust cover can drive a person to distraction trying to get the bolt back into the action, there are little bitty springs and plungers for the lock that keeps the bolt head from turning before it is ready to engage in the barrel extention, and I may have forgotten a couple of watch out for's
