I may be in the market for a new shotgun soon. THe only one I've ever had was a .410. Does anyone have suggestions? I thought of the Defender type, but maybe one with a stock would be better. I know my purpose determines my need, and my purpose is to use it hunting birds or shooting clays, maybe take a class with it.

Mine the Archives, there's a Comstock Lode of info.

You do NOT want a shotgun with just a pistol grip and no stock, trust me.

You're very welcome.

For most folks starting out, a Big Four pump is a good first shotgun, and a basis for a battery of them.

In my opinion, asking the question "What shotgun is best for me?" is akin to asking "What kind of woman is best for me?". There are many quality choices out there, and some bad ones as well. All the different choices have their proponents and their opponents. Some people like pump, some autos; just like some like redheads, some blondes. Some like over/unders, some like SxS; just like some prefer plump girls, others skinny girls. No one can tell you what is best for you. You really have to decide that yourself. My advice is to check out all of them and see which ones feel right. There are some good sources on info here (Dave is one of the better ones). But, the most they can do is tell you the pros and cons of the different types and give their preferences. When it comes down to deciding which one is the best for you, make that decision for yourself. I'm certain you planned to do so, so please don't take this as a slight against you.

For example, a lot of people think the HK P7 is one of the finest handguns ever made, the epitome of perfection. However, after shooting one this weekend, I realized I don't care for it. Kind of hard to put into words what it was I didn't like about it, it just didn't feel right.

Just my 2 cents.

Frank

P.S. A PG is fun and compact, but don't let it get too close to your face. If you do, you may end up cutting your gum right above your two front teeth. (Not that I know anyone who did that yesterday.)
