I ran across this paper, that claims to have been written at the request of Glock, while researching. While I don't have much time to read it, I thought those here would find it interesting, especially the second paragraph.

The paper seems to several fundamental flaws, principally that levels of "gun violence" can be reduced by targeted public heatlh style advertising directed towards those portions of the public most strongly opposed to gun control measures, i.e., the author's ideal type.

Breaking it down:

First flaw: these are the type of people who rarely if ever engage in violent acts with guns;

Second flaw: these aren't the type of people who vote in large numbers and therefore targeted advertising will not equate to easier passage of restrictive firearms laws by removing voter opposition or increasing voter support;

Third flaw: increase in restrictive firearms laws is more closely correlated with increases in levels of violence with firearms, not decreases.

I sure hope this garbage didn't earn anyone an advanced degree.

***?:fire: "Max Weber's Ideal Type" is nothing more than a novel spelling of "sterotype."

The three broad elements of an Ideal Type of American Gun Obsession are: emotional rather than rational belief systems (rooted in American anti-intellectualism); status hypersensitivity (rooted in the subculture of violence); and anti-government sentiment (also rooted in the subculture of violence). The Ideal Type of American Gun Obsession arises as the status concerns of disadvantaged whites are mobilized by the "democratic surge" of the 1960s that create an irrational preoccupation, or obsession, with guns.

See, you may not have known it, but we're all actually racist, paranoid, poor, white, highly religious southern high school dropouts who hate the government. Despite the results of the 'study' being 'mixed,' the stereot- I mean Ideal Type - is still good enough for this clown of a 'researcher.'

I could do a study like this too. First you do whatever research you feel needs to be done to get people to believe you. Then you write down the results you WISH you had gotten, and stare at them until you have thought up explanations for every difference between what you found and what you were looking for. You can make the process easier by choosing moronically flawed research methods to begin with.
