I have the opportunity to purchase any or all of these guns. What is worth picking up? Do not know the prices...but if I know what they are worth I can make an offer.

***Here is what I will do. If any of you want anything pictured in this post pm me with a price you are willing to pay. I will then make an offer to the owners. However, I should warn you that they are using my 2005 Blue Book of gun values as a frame of reference for the prices. They do not seem to be too interested in selling multiple guns at a discount. But that may change. These guns are located in MA. Would need to go through FFL. *Mods - if this is inappropriate please only remove this paragraph with the offer.

yes. all of them.

you jerks. are you going to leave those adorable guns homeless?

Offer the guy $1800 for the lot (sans ammo, tell him to sell that online and he'll make a bundle)

I am not crazy about some of the Mil-Surps, but if you can afford/want them all, why not get'em. Or just get the ones you want.
I would love to have all of the pistols and side hammer (sorry can remember proper terms) rifles and shotguns.

I agree with Pax, theres some fine looking firearms there some aren't worth much but some can be worth a bundle offer $1800-2000 but skip the ammo all that would be a great start for a collection and the resale would get you a nice profit if you decide to go that route, you can check Gunbroker for individual prices.

How many different Springfield trapdoors are you looking at? Shoot, if you can swing it get it all.

This is why you should "thin the herd" while you still have all your faculties.

When your croak, anything you still have stashed in the closet will be "disposed of" for pennies on the dollar. I see it all the time.
It may apply to all things, but it sure does apply to guns.

Looks like a rather 'eclectic' collection. Some are old European, some ???
The Colt Govt 380 (#6), yes.
I'd have someone knowledgable of Trapdoors check out the serial number of 9/10; if it's a Model 1873 it could be suprisingly valuable.
Not a Custer because it's not a carbine.
#48 is interesting - looks like a Snider or Allin (I'm not too knowledgeble but I do recognize them from the design) - another possibly rare item!

If they are in good condition, if you like them, if you can afford them, and if you can get them for a reasonable price, then buy them. If those criteria cannot be met, pass on them.

you can never have enough guns, especially interesting ones.

you can however, have a shortage of money preventing you from having more guns.

I see a Ljungman in there, that one alone could be worth close to $800. But then again, I'm a sucker for the mil-surps.

Edit to add: #11 looks like a Lebel to me. That could bring a great price too, depending on condition.

#60 is a Smith & Wesson Mod. 41. If you can get it for less than $600, I'd recommend buying it. Easily the best US-made .22 pistol.

pick up all of those 22BB's you can get certain collectors will pay reasonably well for them

As a package, I would think that there's a lot of good collector's material there with some non-collectibles. I'd say get it and keep the ones you want and offer the other's in the FS/FT forum here.

One thing you should have your friend seriously consider is to sell them at gun auction. Experienced gun auctioneers know how to get top dollar for them and often get surprising prices for run of the mill guns.

The auctioneer would probably also have a pretty good idea what is hot in the collector market right now, and there may be a few pieces he might want to have sold in a more specialized auction.

Looks like someone was doing a little spring cleaning. First impression- lots of JUNK. :barf: The pistols are low quality especially.

Should you buy them to boost your collection? I'd say no, and since you're asking us nothing is jumping out at you.

Should you buy them as a business move? Maybe. You could try to buy these at a low bulk price (figure it out) and then sell them off one at a time to turn a profit. But that may take time.

Overall A LOT OF JUNK. It reminds me why I focus on quality not quanity. :)

Some really nice stuff, like the S&W 41. Some really neat, interesting stuff, like the Krag, the Snider, the Schmidt Rubin. And some no-account junk, like the Raven 25. (But a sort of classic piece of junk.)

But it looks like all these fine and not-so fine guns are being stored in a dank basement, without proper care. I see active rust on many of them. That S&W Model 41 (a fine and valuable pistol) has some NASTY fingerprints which are quietly etching their way deeper and deeper even as you read this.

This collection is being destroyed.

I'd say get a clean cotton cloth, and spray it with CLP. Wipe down all the exposed metal on all the guns. And GET THEM OUT OF THAT BASEMENT!

rust collector
October 19, 2007, 09:45 PM
but I am also seeing a bit of rust, and there could be a lot more in bores and mechanisms. This will affect collector value, but more importantly, you need to make sure your friends understand that not every piece is 98%. Then, get the Ljungman, the S&W 41, the trapdoors if you want to cherrypick, or make a bulk offer for the lot.

Two thousand or 2500 would sound good to sellers and reselling what you don't want would probably get you into the stuff you want pretty cheap. Don't trust old ammo, though. And forget about beating gun traders at their own game.

Almost all of the rifles are worth keeping. ESPECIALLY 28-29-30. Even in bad shape, an original condition Krag is worth a decent sum. The majority of the pistols are junk but CERTAINLY try to get 60, the Smith 41.

October 19, 2007, 10:38 PM
they are using my 2005 Blue Book of gun values as a frame of reference for the prices. They do not seem to be too interested in selling multiple guns at a discount.

As said--lead them to an auction house. Or, encourage them to keep the collection. Unless they have a rare bird in there, they probably won't be getting what they (on the face of things) might be expecting.

nwilliams
October 19, 2007, 10:56 PM
I agree all the rifles would make fine additions to my collection.

What's the max you are willing to spend?

I don't know the values on all of them but some of them are worth something....

Some of the ones that stand out right away.....I assume you have multiple pictures of some the same guns?
40: Krag
42 (and 24?): Swedish Ljungman
12 (and 53?): French Mannlicher Berthier M.1916 Infantry Rifle
16: Remington 1879 Argintine Rolling Block
48: M1891 Argentine Mauser (modified?)
41: Arisaka Type 38
18 (and 49?): Enfield Snider
17 (and 46?) : Springfield (maybe an 1884 or 88?)
50: 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Cadet?

You can check out places like gunbroker.com to get an idea of what some of these guns sell for.

Good Luck!

OK can somone explain to me why number 20 looks like a MN 91/30 but also doesn't look like one? Is that the receiver pictured above? Maybe its the way the photo was taken?

marlin1888
October 23, 2007, 04:43 AM
I'm pretty sure picture #81 is the action cover for picture #45 (Japanese Arisaka Type 38, 6.5mm Rile). The cover is worth about $100 for an original one (considering the rifle itself is only worth about $250.00), since it's in pretty nice shape. Also his 1891 Moisn is from Finland (not Russian), and they are getting much harder to find (although it looks like it’s not in the greatest of shape).

I rather enjoyed looking at the pictures. It's a nice cross section of bolt action development, and I'm sure who ever owned them originally probably enjoyed them very much (before the wet basement go hold of them).

One common thread thru all these pieces, with the exception of a Smith 686, they were all dirt cheap, by local standards of the time. While an unmodified Krag is a valuable collector now, they could be had in local hardware stores "back in the day" for next to nothing. Just about everything in that collection has the same trait. Difference being now, some have skyrocketed in value, while others remain junk.

I think you kneed to do some research on the ammo boxes and old powder cans. Ammo boxes are outrageous in prices. Powder can collecting is just getting started but some already bring big bucks. Maybe there is more money in boxes than guns. There are a couple of web sites devoted to collecting both.
Good luck,,,goldy
