I got a bayonet for my Enfield No.4 Mk1 today. It's tight as heck and doesn't want to go on. I don't want to force it and I don't want to file around the barrel without asking advice. Are they supposed to be this tight?

No, but you need to remember that those things have been made at a lot of different places and under a lot of different conditions so some small variances in dimension are bound to occur.
I stopped putting bayonets on my No4's because I didn't like scratching up the barrel.
