I've got the go ahead form the wife to by an FN FAL. I'm going economy from Ohio Rapid Fire. Question is do I go with the carbine or rifle. One of the draw-backs of the rifle is the funky grenade laucher style muzzle attachment. The carbine has a ported muzzle break, though loud, should help in action rifle and 3 gun comp.

I don't expect this rifle to shoot sub-MOA like my scoped hunters. Though fully capable I doubt I'll ever shoot over 200yds, most of the time 100 or less.

thanks,
tjg

You can get either with or without the muzzle break (it's not a "grenade launcher" as that would be illegal). Personnally i don't like em but i'm not a gamer. I would expect that the carbine would be much handier in competion and wouldn't give up anything in the range you spec'd. I like my carbine (18"), but haven't finished building my rifle so i can't compare.

A good fal site is www.falfiles.com.

I may have erroneuosly called it a grenade launcher, it is the ribbed break.

yeah its kind of confusing. Even muzzle brakes cannot be a certain diameter because they could then be used with rifle grenades and thereby become 'grenade launchers'. Of course if you get one with a brake most competant gunsmiths can remove it later. For that matter you can cut the rifle barrel down yourself to carbine length pretty easily.

...I own both a 21"-bbl ARS/Imbel-build rifle and an 18"-bbl DSA carbine, and the full-length FAL feels muzzle-heavy and handles like a pig for me. The shorter carbine balances MUCH better and handles more dynamically, without sacrificing sight radius(unless you go all the way down to 16" for your barrel length) - which is the best of both worlds IMO for 3-gun/action rifle. You'll want that brake when it comes time to double-tap those close-range targets - I don't find the increased blast to be a problem for me as long as I'm shooting the rifle in the open air, but the short barrel + brake + covered firing line = dirty looks from bystanders.

I've owned both ARS and Ohio Rapid Fire FALs. Trust me, you'll be very happy with your ORF rifle. Personally, I like FALs with the original barrel length.

Look at it this way, if you don't like the full length barel, you can always have it shortened; if you buy a carbine....you've got to rebarrel for additional length. Just a thought.
