Ever have your own backyard shooting match? Something like a target shoot where all involved pay,oh say $10.00 to enter, and the winner takes the cash prize? Or maybe something even more involved or elaborate, like a backyard cowboy action shoot or something along the lines of an IPSC match ( of course I don't mean in an urban area)? Would such a thing be legal or offer insurance problems? I was thinking of maybe hosting something like this. I have a friend who has hosted a skeet shoot like this for years and never had any problem but wanted to ask around a bit before I tried it.

A couple Pics from a "backyard match" at my place:

I've got the standard setup to run IDPA type scenarios and a Timer. We also do some "carbine" matches and some 300-400 meter shoots. At least here in KS I've got to be careful with what the county interprets as a "club" or commercial enterprise. Once they think that's what you're up to, then the special use permits kick in and impact assessments. So at no time does any money change hands and it's my invited guests only. I've had a couple of local CCW instructors offer to rent my place and I'm just not going there.

As for insurance, no shooting takes place unless I'm there and it's guests or relatives, so my homeowners INS covers it.

Really it's just some friends getting together to practice.

Years ago we would do A hanging gong shoot. Pay A dollar or so for A shot at the gong. Hit and add another dime or quarter to the pot and all who hit the gong would step back A couple or yards. Keep shooting, hitting and paying until the last hitter got the pot. Was fun.
