Failure to launch!

Ok so today I was supposed to leave on an elk hunt in unit 7 & 8 in North central Colorado.
I am looking forward to going. This will be a solo trip just me and my horse and 9 days in the high country.
So I wake up this morning to a sick little girl with a 104 degree fever. After a 2 hour delay for an appointment and a Doctors office visit we have a confirmed case of strep throat.
I get home finish some last minute details and wait for the wife to come home from work so I can hit the road. About 1 hour into the wait my throat starts getting sore I start getting a headache and a fever. Guess who else has a suspected case of strep??...
:banghead:
In any case tomorrow I'll see how things are going. If I am feeling half human I'll be heading out for 8 days of hunting. Just in time for the first winter storm of the year.
Sick, solo, and stoked! Come hell or high water I will make it out to chase wapiti in the high country.
As I write this I am eyeballing a bottle of veterinarian grade injectable antibiotics and a 14 ga 50cc syringe my wife uses on horses and such. Hmmmm. That ought to cure just about anything don't ya think!
Right now I am asking myself.. Do you feel lucky punk? Well do ya!?!;)
Oh yes a hunting I will go..

I can't tell if your kidding about self-medication.
I would just see the doc, start prescribed anit-biotics and go hunting if you feel up to it. I've been susceptible to tonsilitis over the years (never had them taken out), after the first day of anti-biotics I ususally feel fine.
Of course, I've never gone hunting, so YMMV.

You can always hunt amother time but you die only once for real. Take care of yourself and the family.
I know it is something you really want but take care of yourself first!

Going into the woods solo or otherwise while "coming down with something" is not a prudent idea. You need to hunt, but your family needs you more. I cancelled a week-long hunt last week to care for my Baby Girl (and She's 22, but I'm Her Dad). I'm sure you were joking about the vet meds, but just in case . . . an old Montana cowboy, whom I revered, gave his wife of many years a shot of horse meds one time thinking it would help her. She damn near died. I personally contracted pneumonia while on a solo hunt 20-some-odd-years ago . . . when you're weak as a kitten, caring for yourself is nigh on to impossible. I feel fortunate that friends came up to see how I was doing & to hunt for a couple days. Think about it. Besides that, we'd miss your posts if something adverse happened & you already bagged a trophy "stickerhead" this year . . .

I was joking about the vet meds. I might be a fanatic but I've been working on not being stupid for a couple of years now.;)

Thought so, but then old Wahoo Bob was pretty savvy before his rude awakening & I'm still doing stupid things on occasion after 60 years . . .

When I still practiced medicine, If I treated a child for a "Positive Strep", I also checked to see if anyone else was getting the same thing. If it was an adult, especially if they were planning something like a fishing trip (Or an older brother playing an important game that week) I would consider treating that person. If you get the antibiotic, you can go hunting while sick (as long as you take special care, and hydrate, gets some rest, and take the meds like you should), but if you are sick when you go, and DO NOT have the antibiotics, you can get seriously ill from strep. Untreated strep leads to Scarlet fever, which leads to damaged heart valves. Penicillin, or if allergic, Erythromycin or Keflex.
Don't use vet meds, if you don't know about MG/kg.

Hank,
Thanks
I am positive for strep I went in this morning. I am taking 500 mg of Amoxicillen three times a day. I am feeling better already.

Dont forget to replace your toothbrush! My wife had a he** of a time with strep infections last year. M.D. just kept giving her antibiotics, after the 3rd visit in 4 months one of the nurses said.."you did replace your tooth brush, didn't you"? worked like a charm...

Just in time for the first winter storm of the year.
Not to sound like a school girl, but that is enough to get me excited...
Bummer on the strep throat. My advice is get some Liption noodle soup, mrs. dash garlic mix and fresh ground pepper. Hot tea with about 1 second of whiskey, honey and lemon juice, and toast helps.

When that white patch in the back of the throat goes away, that's when life can begin anew. Until then, stay with the antibiotic regimen and don't be stoopid. :)

Better to be safe than sorry but if and when you do get back let us all know how it went.
Medical has my elk hunt ruined this year , I guess, ah heck I know, and it is hard to take in the 3rd degree.
Good luck.

Glad you're okay & were successful! We ARE stubborn creatures . . . any pics? I have debased myself to being an elk voyeur, since the doc finally convinced me that my heart doesn't tolerate hard hunting, meat on my back, & mountains anymore . . . but I had a grand time getting here!

Unfortunately my camera died before the elk was shot but I do have some pre-kill photos.
I'll get to them later with the after action report.
