Can i neck down 30-06 cases to .280 and not have to neck turn? Will there be any other problems with case dimensions?

I've necked down .30-06 cases to .280 and then fire-formed them to bring the shoulder back...they tend to crush a little in the process. Never had any problems doing it, but have stopped since I now have lots of regular .280 brass. It can get confusing when you have brass that is "modified" from what the headstamp reads.

You might have a problem if you try and neck down military brass since it's thicker. The stuff I did before was all commercial cases. Never had to neck turn any of it.

Back before the .280 Remington was the 7mm Express Remington, and you couldn't find brass in either persuasion, the .30-06 brass was necked up to .35 Whelen, then necked back to .284 to move the shoulder up. The shoulder was moved up to prevent getting .280 rounds into a .270 Win.

At least, that's the way it was explained to me.

The 280 case (2.530) is slightly longer than the 30-06 (2.484), and the shoulder is slightly more forward to prevent It from being chambered in either the 30-06 or 270.

The necking up to .35 then down to .284 creates a partial shoulder on the case and alows it to chamber without head space problems for fire forming. The case will be a bit short for a while until several loadings stretch the case to length. At that point it will need to be trimmed.
