Moderator abuse

Without naming names, let me just say that certain moderators close threads with class. Others make a smart-alecky comment and then close the thread. That not only lacks class, but is an abuse of moderator privilege.

FWIW.

Actually as a rule I find the moderators here to be pretty well spoken and relatively nice. I do feel that we have become a bit too strict as far as the board as a whole but it is not my house, nor my rules and respect the decisions made by the owners.

I would suggest you PM the specific mods, as they may have simply been using humor ineffectively. Course maybe they just felt like being an A$$ that day as we all have days like that were folks are working on our last nerve.

Even a Mod can have a bad day allot of different styles of answers and humor
.
I for one would not want the job and if forced to accept it would want allot of raises!:D

Having administrator privileges turns people into Nazis eventually. But I have seen less of that here than just about any other moderated forum. The rec.guns newsgroup is the only moderated forum I know of that's maybe less abusive. (Hint: stay away from Yahoo groups.)

You wouldn't believe some of the moderator abuses I've seen elsewhere. THR is pretty good.

Privileges?

Is that what "burden" and "duty" are called nowadays?

Trust me, guys, as the newest moderator on the crew, I can attest that any possible "glamor" associated with the job evaporates within the first 24 hours.

Not to say that moderating can't be fun, but most of the time it's an awful lot like work.

I'm not as good at it as most of the others, but I try to preserve civility where I can.

If you bump heads with a mod, you are always free to PM him on it. You might be surprised at how many things we do with considerable reluctance.

We're acutely aware that the large majority of members are civil, well-mannered, and well-intended. We also understand that even our better members slip sometimes.

One of the simple pleasures you largely give up when you're drafted as a mod is the freedom to roll around in the mud with posters who have just earned their "bozo button" and want to show it off in public.

We have to be the adult in the room even when it would be more fun to join the verbal pillow fights.

And, while it may not be immediately apparent, we (the mods) actually learn from our members. THR is an exceptionally rich environment of experience and viewpoints.

When we can have civil exchanges and discussions of those things, life is good.

And most of y'all are really very good about that.

Thanks.

I personally like when Art closes threads with a comment like 'enuf'. Watch out for Art's grammaw though...

Yep, the Moderators 'round here are generally neutral & gentlemanly. They wisely pull the plug right before we're all about to lynch some opinionated, know-nothing troll. Wait...that's not ME is it?!?

Having administrator privileges turns people into Nazis eventually.

That may apply to SOME people but i wouldn't make that statement an absolute.

Given the massive amount of traffic/info here and the relatively few mods, I think they do a great job.

On a separate note, i think that for the first 30 days of any forum registration, people shouldn't be allowed to post and can only use the "search" button.

I've been around here for awhile and have, on a few occasions, been the subject of a few friendly *talking to's* by the mods. I had it coming - no hard feelings. These guys have class.

Some of the guys just have a way of *talking* that could be misconstued if you didn't know them.

Cut a mofo a break and get thicker skin. Ain't no thaing - it's teh intrawebs.

Man, I LOVE these threads! They're the most fun a guy can have on THR, since the old L&P closed.

"People" was meant as a general, collective term; as such, I think my use was accurate. I think THR mods do a great job. You folks should see what kind of distruction a bad moderator or administrator can do when he (or she) starts abusing his power.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
(But Cor-Bon Pow'r Ball ammunition runs as slick as a wet weasel).

I LIKE the moderators around here. Unlike other forums, they usually don't fire a cheapshot & then lock things up before you can launch a return volley.

And Godwin's Law comes into play once again.

Being one in the set of all people, and also in the subset of administrators, I'm wondering if you have any predictions on when I will eventually become a Nazi, zxcybob? On that day, I plan to quit being a moderator.

Yes, I know you've tempered your initial statement by saying things like, "I think THR mods do a great job." But, you have to realize that statements like you made are bound to raise at least a little ire. Proposing that you meant people and Nazis in the collective sense makes no difference. Using the word "eventually" means your prediction is a given for the entire set of moderators/administrators sooner or later.

Mal,
As long as you never post : "Pecan Sandies Suck and We hate you!" you will not become a Nazi. ;)

My take is, THR is free, don't like it, leave, or start your own forum.

Heck, if you are just a member of THR to bitch, whine, gripe and disrupt - I'd just as soon you leave as well.
I do not appreciate such behavior, nor do I appreciate Anti's , Trolls and Spammers.

This is a hi-class joint, respectable, and earned all this.
One can learn , or one can choose to learn, everyone has a choice.

Internet Etiquette is to PM Staff, and Mods with a question, problem, or concern.

This Etiquette dates w-a-y back before Internet.

For example:

Mal H is my boss, and I totally mess up something.

Proper Etiquette is for Mal to call me aside, in private, away from other employees, and customers and discuss this in private.

If I have a real concern about the way Mal does something, maybe he has incorrect information, and all.
Again, it is Proper Etiquette to meet with Mal in private and discuss this matter.

One does NOT air dirty laundry, talk down, chew out , even fire another person in view, or earshot of other employees, or customers.

Would you like for customers, co-workers to hear you being called down?
Even by co-workers? Other Management persons?

How do you feel when a customer hollers out in full view, and hearing range -
"This business is awful, I will never come in here again!"

Internet is simply another form of communication, and means to interact with others.

Act Respectable.

Fake until you make it.

Read, learn, heck PM Staff and Mods and "I need to learn how all this Internet Forum works, where I can read up about it?"

Easiest way, is to simply read, not post, and use the search engine.

Internet may be virtual, it does mirror real life.
Internet has shown we have a lot of folks we never really knew beforehand, though suspected, behave the way they do in Real Life, as they post.

That should scare some folks, it does me.
