I'd just installed a Boyds' Smart Stock and higher rings on my 10/22, and we were in the back yard rough-sighting it at about 10 yds on our .22 setup--cedar log backstop and metal spinner target against a giant compost pile 'berm' (horses:rolleyes: ) Beyond that is rolling farmland and woods for about a mile.
I walked it toward the center of the paper plate with the scope adjustments and handed it to D-O-D. He shot a few and then paused on one shot a bit longer. He then unshouldered the rifle and, looking at the ejection port with a puzzled expression and holding the rifle about 45* elevated downrange, pulled the trigger. Guess what? It went BANG just like it was supposed to.
He said "The trigger went 'click' so I thought it misfired" to which I replied "And you decided to test the theory by pulling the trigger?"
Now, when I have the pretravel adjusted to where I like it on my 10/22, the trigger fails to reset once every few hundred rounds. Just wiggle the bolt handle or, if that doesn't do the trick, press forward on the trigger very slightly to reset the trigger. It was probably something like that that made him think it had misfired.
The stock is magnificent BTW. I'm fully converted. Vertical (-ish) pistol grips forever! Now I want to puke when I go back to a 'normal rifle'. I get angry with the preposterously inferior ergonomics.
