WTK: Dimensional Differences btw AR10 & M1A Mags?

I might get Kydex magpouches for my M1A. If I transition to AR10 or just have both in the future I'll probably get the conversion so my mags fit in both guns.

Are there any differences in the mags dimensionally? In other words, if I have magpouches made for my M1A mags, will they fit my future AR10 mags?

AR-10 mags are basically M-14 mags that have an extra notch cut in the side for the mag catch. They also use a different follower, which may be where you run into trouble.

So, yes, they are the same dimensionally. They will fit in the same mag holder. They will probably not transition from one rifle to another without creating problems.

There's a minor controversy about the process of 'destroying' M14 mags and making them into AR10 mags... a bit overblown if you ask me, considering that M14 mags are available in free states around $40 each. I mean, geeze...

It's been awhile since I had an AR10, but IIRC, the mags will still work in an M1A after the mod. I think that's a legal prerequisite, in fact.

I did some reading on this awhile back. (Armalite's website is a good reference. You have to dig a little for the info.) After converting the M14/M1A mags, they will still work in an M1A. The only functional difference is the bolt will not stay open after the last round is fired. This is due to the AR-10 follower.

That's good to know, 'cuz the UPS Man just dropped off one each in the way of a 20 and a 30-rd. M1A Gary Olen Sportsman Guide cheapie special!
Time to go digging on the ArmaLite site... :D

This is what they'll hopefully work in:

Yes it is. :what:

That was the original AR15.com/ArmaLite 2003 offering.
Not too popular with the removable/optional full-length top-rail and mini quad-rail on the forend OR the fixed telestock...
Will it be ugly? YES!
Will it be rare? YES!
Will there be a million of them? NO!
That's why I ordered it that way!

The final config uses the A2 buttstock.
The carbine version has the fixed telestock.

Here's the rifle with the A2 and top-rail:

Those mags only have to work at the range or plinkin'.
ArmaLite sends 2 10-rd. with the gun, and they have the good ones at a reasonable cost.
