i plan on modding my 870 to an 18" with a pistol grip and 2shot mag extension. where can i find this barrel pictured below? i know it's a factory remington barrel but i can't seem to find it anywhere. (beaded 18" smooth bore without the ribbed vents) also what kind of pistol grips do you guys like/prefer?

Most places seem to be out of them, but I've seen the Mossberg "Made for Remington" equivalent around. It's a little cheaper, too. Cabela's has them, Numrich has them, don't know who else.

If you want the OE barrel, you can buy it straight from Remington:

http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/original_factory_barrels.asp

It's part #24620.

I don't know anything about pistol grips, but here are links to the Cabela's online catalog for the different barrels. They do have the Remington one, but they're saying a 2 to 3 week backorder.

Mossberg at Cabela's (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602007-cat20805_TGP&id=0005579212148a&navCount=6&podId=0005579&parentId=cat20805&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20805&hasJS=true)

Remington at Cabela's (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602007-cat20805_TGP&id=0005760212137a&navCount=10&podId=0005760&parentId=cat20805&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=XH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20805&hasJS=true)

They're listing the Rem barrel as 18" and the Mossberg as 18.5"--I'm not sure if that's accurate info.

it's rough, to say the least. If you want compact, maybe telescoping/folding stock.

Or maybe one of those stocks that has a pistol grip AND a regular stock, like an AR configuration.

Shotguns with only a pistol grip work better in the movies than in real life. Stick with a standard stock and learn how to use it.

Addons and mods do not substitute for practice. Go shoot your shotgun until it feels like a body part, not a tool.

HTH....

+1 ... Taking the stock off a shotgun to substitute a Pistol Grip is counterproductive. It ruins the balance, eliminates the hands/shoulder/cheek contact and makes the recoil a real factor to deal with. As a toy its OK but as a serious defensive piece forget the pistol grip.

i'm actually looking at the folding pistol grip version. i might settle for a shorter stock if the price is right.

I don't know, sometimes, a pistol-grip smooth-bore isn't that difficult to use. Just use Managed / Reduced Recoil ammo.

In fact, I often shoot this one single-handed:
