When dad and i bought an SKS from a co-worker recently, the guy gave us the cheap scope he had bought from cabelas but never installed
it is one of those mounting systems where you replace the dust cover with the one with the scope mount
it has a 4X25 scope from tasco or something
dad wanted to try it out so we put it on and took it to the range sunday,
now i did ok with the rifle at 100 yds unscoped, but at 50 yds (trying to sight it in) we couldnt get a good grouping with the scope
i wrote it off on the cheap scope on top of a military caliber rifle.....ive read that it is hard to get a good scope mount for an SKS
anyone have any sucess with this type of scope mount?
it wouldnt break my heart to leave it uncsoped but i think pops likes the looks of the scope too much :D

I have a fairly recently aquired Norinco SKS ... complete with scope-mount receiver cover ... and a red dot.

It shoots good but ... even tho take down pin fits well, the cover does have some slight ''slop''.

I intend to drill and tap the forward right part to take a set screw and then tighten that to eliminate the slack .... that should make things way better. Could be you need to go same way.

Worth getting a good set up ..... as IMO you can do better with a scope or red dot than iron sights .... but then too, my ol eyes ain't so good either!

I had an SKS a few years ago. I had a gunsmith mount a K-Mount on it. He drilled and tapped the receiver on both sides, this mount was rigid.

The cover does have slop, and every time the bolt comes back, it slams against the back of the cover ( I think). I didn't think it was the best idea to mount a scope in this manner.

Mine was dead on at 100 yards, and stayed zeroed. I used a 4x compact scope. Ultralux or something like that. The reason you would use a compact scope is because of the empties. They would ding the heck out of your scope if you used a full size. You can use a full sized scope, but it would be best to use a brass deflector.

As for disassembly, I'm not sure where my SKS stood in that regard. I'm not all that sure I ever tore it down after the mount was installed. I'm sure it wouldn't be too tough. In fact, if you left the scope on the mount, I would think it would shoot the same after reinstalling.

I've heard and read that the Choate mount is extra solid.

Never could get my reciever-mounted scope to do right. After a while I gave up and just use it as a rifle mounted spotting scope to see where I'm hitting with the iron sights.:rolleyes:
