Hi
I dont know much about shotguns. My son bought a used Remington express and it has a problem. If you shoot it and pump it to bring another shell up it brings the first shell up and the second one comes out part way at the same time. This jams both of them so you have to pull the top one out. If you only have one shell in the bottom and pump it that shell will come up and go into the chamber fine, The problem only happens when you have more than one in the bottom. Is this a easy fix or should we take the gun back?
Thanks
Sewerrat

He isn't pumping it fast enough.

Sounds like the gun is being short stroked. Try cycling the action vigorously all the way forward and all the way back and see if the problem persists.

mines is brand new and under 50 shots and jams from time to time when i shoot 3". the part that holds the shell actually moves back but the pump stays the same.... then the next shell jams.

Like the others said this will happen if you're short stroking it or generally not being agressive enough on the pump. It was made to be PUMPED!! not pumped

I was a asst. instructor for my units armory staff, 870 needs to be pumped with authority until it has a few thousand rounds through it. It takes a while for some folks to get used to.

As above, either he's "Short stroking" the gun by failing to bring the pump handle ALL the way back, OR the gun has a defective shell release, and it's failing to hold the shells correctly in the magazine.

To test just which it is, load two shells in the magazine.
Pull the pump handle firmly all the way to the rear (it doesn't have to be fast, just all the way back).
If the shell feeds properly and the second is held in the magazine then it too feeds, the problem is with the shooter.

However, if the second shell also attempts to feed and causes a jam it's the gun.

The first thing you need to be aware of in regard to your problem is, when loading the magazine, to be sure to feed the shells all the way into the magazine until the rim of the shell passes the "shell latch". Some people don't get the shells all the way into the magazine and this causes feeding problems. On an 870, there is a shell latch on each side inside the receiver and they are held in place by the front trigger plate pin.

Second, as others have said, pump the slide VIGOROUSLY. All the way back and then all the way forward VIGOROUSLY. Don't be afraid you are going to hurt the gun. It was designed to operate vigorously.
