Last month or so there was a thread here asking about shooting while riding a motorcycle. Honestly I thought it was kind of silly and posted a silly reply. However, I recently read the book "Seal!" by Lt. Cmdr. Michael J Walsh USN (Ret.) and I came across the following passage from his time in the Phoenix program in Vietnam:

Finally we hit the mother lode. Doc came across a Chieu Hoi [DigMe's note: Chieu Hoi is a reference to a VC or NVA soldier who has turned or been forced to turn to help the US] who claimed to be a Vietcong assassin. He told us about hitting a US Army captain while riding past him on a Honda motorbike. Steering with his left hand, he fired into the officer holding a handgun in his right, or so he claimed when we questioned him about the incident. We ran his story past our regular intelligence channels and learned that a young army officer had indeed been gunned down in the manner described on the day the former VC gave us for the killing. Still, we were not convinced.
Doc and I found a little-used dirt road near the base and borrowed a Honda. We set up some man-sized targets, gave the Chieu Hoi a .45 automatic, a motorbike, and told him to show us how he did the captain. Without hesitation the man jumped on the bike, stuck the pistol in his belt, and headed down the road toward the targets. Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam! Four targets, four holes center mass. Doc and I looked at each other and nodded; the Chieu Hoi was hired.

Given, he wasn't shooting with his left hand as the previous thread talked about but close enough! Just thought those who took part in the previous discussion might find this entertaining. :)

IIRC, a couple of months ago, I was reading about a small (police?) unit in Israel that trains as 2-man motorbike teams, 1 driver, 1 shooter (micro Uzi?) . Apparently, a good tool to have in the bag for urban counter-terrorism.

So how did he operate the throttle?

I can see on a Honda 90 (which has an automatic clutch) shooting with your left hand... but on every bike I've ever seen the throttle is controlled by the right.

So how did he operate the throttle?

I thought about that too and my only guesses are that he either just took his hand off the throttle, let it coast, pulled out the gun, shot, put the gun back and grabbed back onto the throttle and took off. Sounds like a lot but I don't think it would be as complicated as it sounds.

Either that or Vietnamese Hondas back then had a foot operated or left hand operated throttle.

Easy to operate the throttle...just adjust the (hand) choke to maintain speed.

I promise you that shooting into a target the size of, oh...say a bag of concrete, is downright easy at around 35 mph.

Let off the throttle, draw, and shoot...it's reholstering that's the only problem. BTW...I'm not talking about some one handed garbage either...those of you that ride know how stable your bike is at 35.

I don't recommend it (you oughta be running away) but it can be done easily.

(I'll try for .mpegs next time.)

Alternate ending...

Without hesitation the man jumped on the bike, stuck the pistol in his belt, and headed down the road toward the targets...

...and was never seen again. :D

also, at what distance.... that makes a big difference.

if I'm driving up within 10 feet, I can use my left hand on a bike and still hit them....
