Gun photos - Why is this happening?

Admittedly, I am no tech wizard with 'puters. And my card reader is giving me fits. When it works properly, I can select an image (gif?) from a folder
(within removeable disk {F:}), my browser opens and downloads image for viewing. More often, selecting an image "freezes" (crashes?) system and must reboot or disconnect reader from USB cable. Also, less frequently, browser will download image but not display it. Screen is blank; empty.
***???? Conflict somewhere??? Even when it does work, eventually it develops to these impasses. I'm thoroughly lost.....Help, please??
Anybody willing, I will even call you to discuss it. Or you call me; just contact for phone no.
Many, many thanks.

Your computer has obviously been infected by the Brady virus. When you attempt to download pictures of guns, this virus trashes the computer! It's for the CHILDREN!!! :D

Actually, I'm shooting in JPEG format. But when I open the folder, the icon is the same as any other downloaded image. Isn't that normal???

There was a problem with gif images with IE6 SP1. I've never experienced it but read about it. It may just be with XP. Here's a link (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,6624791~root=winme~mode=flat) to a thread about it. The second message in the thread contains a link to an FAQ about it.

Good luck.

what operating system are you running? I'm assuming Windows XP?

Try copying them to your desktop or something instead of working with them off the cardreader. Like working off a floppy disk, it's so slow it may just seem like it's locked up when in reality it's doing this and that ... but unlike floppies you can't hear those and there arne't any blinking lights so it makes it look stuck. Which is a possibility.

I always copy to my hard drive before working with anything.

Just tried again; same lockup.

Huaco- nope; but thanks very much.

Skunk- OS is plain ol' 98; but what you've described sounds very credible.
Down load to disk???? All I've got is camera and reader; how to accomplish this? I'll try anything!!!! to resolve problem!

Open Windoz explorer, not Internet Explorer, and create a new folder in say My Documents and then select the card reader and highlight the subdirectory the photos are in and drag and drop them into the new folder.

If this causes the system to freeze look for or install a new driver for the card reader.

HOLY #$%^ BATMAN!!!!IT WORKS!!!!!:what: :what: :what:

Thanks, Perfessr!!
Now; more questions:

Must I do this whenever I load (read) a new batch of photos?
Will it automatically go to same folder? or create new folder each time?
Are these now downladed to HD; and can I erase (format) card?

Tell me more, please!!!!!!:uhoh:

I make a new folder each time. I usually name the folder whatever that day's date is. (2003-07-15 for today).

If you are copying these files to drive C:, then yes, they are on your HD and you may erase/format the camera's card.

1) it'd be a good idea.

2) no, you would have to drag them to that folder.

3) that's up to you.

4) yes.

ask more!!! :D

BTW, Skunky told you what to do, just Perfessr went into more detail on how to do it.

Well, just got back from a meeting (and a damn $20 parking ticket :cuss: ).

With computers; and technology, HOW to do something is WHAT to do
(At least to my ignorant brain). And yes; many thanks to the Skunkster. And the Perfessr; I need step by step help that he so generously provided.

It seems (for which I am SO grateful) that a folder is automatically created when I "send to" My Docs; I can just sit and watch the download, and QUICKLY retrieve individual icons for viewing. Will now have multi folders there (right?); may have to label them each.

Next question: I've seen programs(?) that allow viewing of the file group images; not just the icons. (tiny little images for selection and magnification) What is this???
Also, can (does it) download mixed media (CF and SM) to the same folder?
How do I actually post an image on the (any) board??
MANY, MANY THANKS blue86buick; and to all who have allowed their valuable time for me to learn something here. :D :D :D

Good idea, Darrin. Thanks. (had to edit this in.)

You weren't tactical enough, Skunk. He out-ninja'ed you! :neener:

But seriously, Windows 98 is probably the last OS I'd really want to mess with in regards to USB support, it's no big surprise that it caused problems.

A good procedure for dealing with card readers on '98 is to download the contents onto a 'pictures' folder on your hard disk, and if you want to, wipe the card.

Look for Paint shop pro 4.12. You should be able to find it in a search function like yahoo or Google

citizen, no problem. Just curious, what kind of camera and reader? Also, do you know exactly how fast your PC is? (500MHz, 1.2GHz, etc...) The amount of RAM you have can also play a factor when dealing with digital camera. Sometimes, the pictures get 'just too big' for the PC.

Just, FYI... :)

Went to a friend's this afternoon and borrowed a copy of PSP 5. Lookin' good!!!! Camera's an Oly c5050, recently acquired; used, lost & found turn-in. Sandisk SDDR-75 reader, ANCIENT (I guess; but it works for me) OS-
Win 98, Pll-350, 128 meg mem, 8.4 HD. Wouldn't know what's current!!
Several friends offered to build systems; CompUSA wants to sell me a MAC;
there are certainly deals on pre-builts...... This is one money pit I refuse to jump into until I HAVE TO.....:neener: That being said, I'd LUV a new set-up; even an i950 printer, or Stylus 2200, a CD burner, DVD player, etc. (maybe usb 2.0, or firewire?) Like I said, a MONEY PIT!!:barf:

Oh, yeah; edited to add - how to post????

there was a thread on here recently that told how to post pictures, supposedly IIRC without having your own webhost service to put them up at. If i can find it, i'll edit it in.

Lets see if I can get this right. To post a picture that is on your own website is the easiest way. Just hit the IMG button and type in or copy the exact address of the picture including it's file extension then select OK. The result is a picture showing up where ever you choose in your message.
http://mywpages.comcast.net/ringer1/sonicboom.jpg

If you don't have your own web space or somewhere on the net to place your pics you have to do them as an attachement. It is a little trickier and requires you to edit your post in two steps but you can still get them to show up in the body of the message. Locate the image on your hard drive. Type up your message, and then select the browse button in the Attach file section under the area where you type the body of the message. Browse to the location on you PC where the image is stored and select it so that it shows up in the Attach file field. When ready submit your post. The attachement will show up as a link at the bottom of your message. Now to get this image to show up in your post - right click on the attachement link and select "copy shortcut". Now select the edit button at the bottom of the post. Go to the point in the message where you want the picture to show up and select the IMG button and paste attachement link that you copied from the post and select OK. Use the Preview option to confirm it is in the message correctly The pic below was inserted this way.

I hope this helps, and isn't to confusing.

Whenever you post pics try to make them small enough that people don't have to scroll to see the entire pic.

Moderators please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is an acceptable procedure.

Ya know, I actually realized that while reading another thread, right before I read this thread. :p I had forgotten you can attach things (like a picture), which then gives you a web addy to link to in the [IMG] tag.
