Spanish Metered Sight

A friend recently bought a replica of the Winchester 1876 Mountie Carbine.

In the literature, it mentions the "Spanish Metered" rear sight.

The sight has "stair steps upon which the rear sight can sit at given intervals like an early trapdoor sight and then distance increments on the ladder sight itself.

He has asked the distributor about this sight. Nobody seems to know the significance of this.
I have done a bunch of looking on the net for any info about this feature with no luck.

Can anyone here point me to a source of info about this sight?

TIA

Iggy

I believe the "Spanish metered" sight was named such to differentiate it from the other types of rear sights that Winchester offered (the Spanish Stairs in Rome are (or were) supposed to be the longest, widest set of stairs in Europe, and the rising graduations look like a staircase, hence the name). The sight does offer more protection against being knocked out of order than most of the other types Winchester offered, but I'm sure some of the Winchester collectors here could tell you some more.

That makes sense.

Thanks,
