FN49 shoots very low: how to fix?

Using all kinds of 8mm ammo, it has to be set to 700m sight position to hit bullseye at 25m. Is that normal for the rifle, or should I look for a lower front sight blade? If so, where? I could just shorten the one it has now...

I have a minty FN49 in 8mm that I shot this weekend with 192 grain Romainian military surplus. To zero at 100 meters I had the ladder set at 300 meters, it out-shot my Remington 03A3. I don't understand the logic for the sights except maybe the Egyptian FN49 was intended to fire the much hotter Turkish ammo. Finally ajusted the gas regulator correctly and the recoil has softened quite a bit. Next gunshow (PA gun collectors) I intend to "load-up" on the cheap Turkish ammo, the FN49 is so easy and quick to clean that the corrosive ammo is a very minor issue with me. I enjoy the FN49 more than my Garand or M1A and I have been shooting it more often than my Romak3. I'm even toying with the idea of buying an S&K scope mount for it ($160).

Your best bet is to send it to me before it blows up on you. Those things are real lemons. :D

Seriously, I do recall mine doing something along those lines. If you have the same model, it has Arabic numerals. I always suspected the things marked off fifty foot increments or something. Let me check something here...

Yup, here it is:

For those FN-49's with a point of impact too low when the rear sight is set to it's lowest setting, I have devised a fix for this annoying problem. The FN-49 lacks a true elevation zero adjustment outside of that mentioned previously. My fix involves drilling and then tapping a small hole in the rear sight leaf just in front of the rear peep sight. Into this hole a set screw is threaded to provide infinite elevation adjustment when the rear sight leaf is on it's lowest setting. This set screw is used to raise the rear sight leaf as required to correct the low bullet point of impact. The modification also involves making a small cutout in the rear sight leaf slider to accommodate this set screw, which would otherwise prevent it from traveling fully to its lowest (most rearward) setting. This modification is hardly noticeable and works great. Feel free to e-mail me if you have this problem and need additional assistance.

I'd post a link, but I found this buried in a deep cache. Not sure where the original is.

For ammo, I'd try the S&B non-corrosive stuff. That was always the best stuff for my late lamented FN-49. Man, I was a fool to sell that rifle!

There are scope mounts out there for both side mounting and top mounting (replacing the rear sight leaf. The military style side mounts may be more secure. IIRC, there is a slot for the scope mount along the left side of the receiver.

It's all coming back to me now. Isn't there a deep ledge between the first rung on the tangent sights and the next? I think that first hole is the "battle sight", set very low for close range work. I think it gets a lot better as you raise it to the second and third notch. IIRC, the sights then work well out to 100 meters, 200 meters and so on.
