Nice buck, nice pic!

550 yards? Looks like open cropland, but still...

What position? What kind of support? Sling?

Not trying to hassle you, am genuinely curious.

You never shot a deer before and decided it would be a good idea to shoot one over a quarter of a mile away??? :what:

+1. Also, what scope/power did you use? Pretty powerful round for a buck. Congrats

sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys, I have shot many rifles for a long time so the shot wasnt what bothered me i felt pretty comfortable in my abililty to put the round were it needed to be. The shot was taken from a standing point with the rifle resting on my budies tool box of his truck, I dont remember the power but but i know its a swarovski ( i think thats how it is spelled) scope that cost more than the remmington 700 bdl it was mounted on!:what:

And as fare as for shots the same rifle killed an Antelope later that day at 630 yards.

I was using the .338 ultra mag because thats what i had available, and I felt more comfortable with it than my AR-15 with Iron sights.

How much does the .338 UltraMag drop at 550 and 630 yards?

At 550 it drops one buck and at 630 it drops one antelope. :D

I dont know the exact bullet ballistics of loads we were using, he hand loads him self, so what I can tell you is this, it is a 200 grain bullet moving at 3200 fps.

Hell of a shot, man. Nice buck, too. How high were you holding, and what were you sighted at? I've kicked around a .338UM instead of a .300UM.

November 4, 2007, 01:34 PM
Well, it IS a nice buck. If NO ONE knew the ballistics, then you need to learn them . . . since you didn't know exactly where that round would print at that range, I'm glad you effected a clean kill. I shoot (paper/gongs) at out to 1,000 yards & coyotes/gophers out to 500 all the time (it's a passion) & to be consistently successful, one needs a) intimate knowledge of both the rifle & the load, and b) ample trigger time. Given your explanation, I won't be so un-HighRoad as to call BS on the range estimate, but I WILL say both you & the deer were lucky. If you plan to shoot at such ranges, qualify both yourself, your rifle, the optics, and your ammo at same. Every hunter owes his/her quarry a clean, humane, and an as-swift-as-possible demise.

Listen here kojha48 why dont you stand out to 550 yards and see if I can hit you, I am being very honest about the range and first of all it wasnt my rifle I used a friend of mine that I had shot before becasue I felt the deer was out of my range for my AR-15 so i used the better of the 2 rifles for the situation,l I also know the scope which has mildots and the second dot down is sighted in for 500 yards, so I knew what I was doing and were I was going to hit. This is my question why has THR gotten so bad one cant simply post a picture of something he is proud of without some ******* ruining it:fire:. I just as soon you not even commented on it, so if you doubt my ability my offer still stands. You stand out to 550 yards and we will see what happens. And just because I didnt know the exact ballistics doesnt mean the person standing directly to my right didnt know them. Just because this is my first buck doesnt mean I dont know how to use a rifle or that this is my first time to ever shoot at something!

Just to add I had made a 500 yard shot the day before with the same rifle shooting at a rock!

Let me say something my mom always said:
"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

If BDLS said he made the shot, then we'll take his word that he made it. End of story.

I got my first one this morning. 130 to 150 yards open sights. I was in a sitting position with no artificial support or sling. A .270 win was used. I took this one in Southwestern Colorado.

BDLS. I do not know all the specifics...but I can tell you I have been hunting deer for over 15 years and have never taken a shot over 300 yards...in NW Nebraska no less...with a rifle I am very familiar with. If you say you made that shot so be it. But the comment about how bout you stand 500 yards out and see what happens is not very high road either.

Bottom line. The details you provide make it very hard for a seasoned hunter to accept the end result. The fact is the pic you provided proves that at the very least you got a good deer on the ground. Congradulations.

Just a couple of questions...if you feel like answereing.

How many times have you shot that rifle? How many years have you been deer hunting? Did you use a range finder to get distance or did you walk it off? Just curious...no need to answer if you do not want to...and I am not trying to bait you into anything either...just curious.

skers, back up and re-read. He's a shooter more than a hunter; this was his first deer. The scope had the mildots, which the owner had explained. He shot from a rest.

If you have the right gear and you know the range, all that's required then is a stationary target. 550 really isn't that big a deal in what sounds like nearly-perfect circumstance. I say that based on my 22" steel plates at my 500-yard range here at the house.

I'll echo the folks saying that was a dang fine shot with a caliber suited to such shooting.

There is a video done by a coworker of a friend that using a .338 something dropped an antelope at 1100 yards.

I have no problem with BDLS or the shot. I just had a few questions on my mind. Hell if you are confident in you rifle/load you can shoot very long distances. I myself use a 30-06 for deer...and the 300 yard mark is my cut off. I usually hunt from a stand...and have yardage marked out using my range finder.

"The shot was taken from a standing point with the rifle resting on my budies tool box of his truck"

You're lucky Lenny didn't see this. You'd be less a little cash right about now. Shooting from a vehicle is illegal in MT. Even if it's from a rest like that.

I did not know that was illegall im Mt, Thanks for clearing that up, I am familiar with most of the laws but not that one, now that I know that it will not happen again. Again thank you.

I did use a range finder and as for how many times I had shot that rifle, the answere is 3 times before taking that shot. However I have shot many large caliber guns before up to and including the great .50 caliber. This would be the first year that I have been dear hunting, however back home in Texas I used take care of all the rabbits and koyotes that I could for a rancher freind of mine and he let me use his property to shoot instead of paying for a gun range. I will add that I consistenlty shoot out to 300 yards with the iron sights on my AR.

Yeah, BDLS, if you look at the regs, it states that you must be copletely out and/or off of the vehicle, or some such verbage. The game warden in that area (Lenny, forgot his last name) is real hard over about that one too.

Ya know this thread has gotten into more about the dang shot, than the buck. So I tell you what if thre is anyone and I mean anyone who thinks I am lying then I will meet them at any gun range in Missoula, Mt area or anywere else for that matter in this area and do it again, but this time I will not be taking an animal so I will need take home something so after I have made the shot again the individual or individuals will owe me say 50 bucks apiece for wasting my time, I know the price sounds steap but so is calling some one a LIAR:fire:. and in the mean time moderators please close this thread as it has gotten way off topic. Thank you.
