If ya'll will remember I had some trouble with wonderwads doing wierd things in my 1860 Pietta. Since then I've used my homemade lube pills without problems. Then I stiffened the next batch up with a little more paraffin and made them a little thicker, 1/4 in., to compensate for lighter loads 20 and 25 gr..
Well I went to the farm to play, loaded really careful, drew a bead, and the stinking ball came out of the gun stuck to the pill and fell on the ground 6 feet in front of me. This happened with a couple of chambers and a couple fired just fine. The really scary one managed to stick the ball just into the forcing cone and hissed and spit at me while the powder slowly burned away. That took 2 or 3 seconds. Needless to say, very high pucker factor. :eek: It appeared that the powder had become pressed into the pill.

I've never had a mishap using powder, ball, and grease or just powder and ball. I think I'll keep it simple from now on 'cause the fancier I try to get the wierder things go for me. Too bad too because my little girl just loves cutting out the lube pills.

I put a card wad over the powder to keep the lube pill from contaminating the powder most of the time. It doesn't take that long to do and has stopped my revolvers from doing what yours did, even though I've not had one as bad as you did.

I had a cylinder loaded for awhile with a lube pill under the ball and the powder migrated into the lube pill also .....I guess we aren`t makeing them dry enough ...I went back to lube over the ball ..My pistols are so broke in I only have to lube 2 holes to keep them running smooth anyway .

Very glad to have read this since I was going to use prewaxed wads in my 1860 Pietta. When using my old Army 1858 Uberti 44 Remington in the 80's I only used crisco which was pretty messy and hoped to elminate this with the wads but it looks like crisco again after reading this.

I the same problem with one batch that I didnt use tallow with. I use tallow, bees wax and parafin and have never had a problem. My pills stay crisp even in the summer. I leave pistols loaded weeks on end with this last bunch of pillis that I made without problems.
