I've ran across some WIN NT 45 AUTO brass with what seems to be a small primer pocket. ID=.175, I measured a WSP, it's .175 OD. Is this one of those "but not always" cases?

Just when I thought I knew something about reloading:confused:

Is the I.D. in the case exactly the same as the primer? I seem to remember some cases that had an oddball sized primer.

There are wide reports of Winchester and Federal .45 ACP "NT" cases with small primers. I have even heard of cases with a bushing in the large pocket to take the small primer; probably early production with the super clean small primer. The manufacturers have just stuck a finger in the eye of every reloader in the country. Phooey.

Frankford Arsenal used to make .45 ACP with an in-house .204" primer so as to prevent mixing of rifle and pistol primers.

Jim,

Years ago when I was with American Rifleman magazine we had a guy show up with 1,000 primers he had purchased at a gun show several years before. He tried loading with them, but they weren't the right size, so he brought them to us for an explanation.

That was the first time that I had ever heard of the Frankford .204 primer.

Just lovely! A small primered 45 ACP. Well, I guess I will stick with my old brass. I am sure Starline will continue to make large primer 45 ACP brass. Perhaps this is a move by Winchester to go to one primer for all centerfire pistol rounds. It might be a cost saver, but what if your 1911 has a off center firing pin? Could the firing pin actually hit the brass instead of the primer?

I Hate these fieaking things. I ran into a ton of these picking up some brass at my range. Crushes the poop out of a new primer and jams up your press if you don't catch it. Cany anyone tell me WHY they would make a 45 ACP with a small primer???!!!!????

The only non economic reason I can think of is they want to be able to use a small rifle primer for it's cup thickness on high pressure loads. This is the .45ACP and if you aren't Triton or a max pressure reloader of some sort it doesn't make sense. Does .45 Super brass use the small primer pocket?

.45 Super: large primer; .450smc: small primer. .40 Super: small primer; newer .400 Cor-Bons: small primer.

Hmmm.... could it be a trend towards all small primers?

I saw this same brass at the range this past weekend.

Anyone know what the "NT" abreviation means?

Anyone know if this comes as loaded factory? And which load?

I think "NT" is non-toxic. That's the Winclean ammo.

The WinClean primer pocket is the standard large pistol size with a larger than standard flash hole.

I think it is in their "Super Clean" line where they use a non-toxic primer and no-lead in the bullet. Tin or something.
