Hows the quail/rabbit hunting down there? im gonna be there for Thanksgiving to visit my grandparents and would like to know if the quail and rabbits this year are as numerous as my grandfather claims. i suspect he "embelishes" his figures to get us to visit more frequently than we already do:D:rolleyes:

I'm fairly close to Carlsbad. We've had a big year for rain, about 50% more than normal. Should be a great year for quail. We had 3 hatches, I believe.

That's in W. Texas, but SE New Mexico usually runs pretty close to what we do.

That's thick, nasty desert in places, and generally not dog-friendly. Depending on where you're going, there's a lot of public land up a little higher on the Lincoln N.F., w/ more juniper cover, and some BLM south of and around the caves, that's more greasewood lecheguilla and scrub. See if you can pick up a land-use map - things aren't marked very well down there. I used to get a lot of ground runners when I hunted down there. Plenty of open country.

Good luck.

Not as many blues as there used to be, for some reason.

thats why i love AZ, because all the types of quail in the USA are also native to Arizona! WOOT!

If your willing to go out by Lake Brantly, there is usually an abundance of quail around there and rabbit. I grew up in that area.
