I go to Prentice Cooper, open every day except Tues and Wed, and on hunt weekends...

25 50 and 100 yard, pretty well maintained. No fees. I even find good 223 brass there sometimes.

On Saturdays, you might have to wait for a lane. Monday and Friday seem the least crowded..

+ 1 for Prentice Cooper for handguns, rifles, and shotgun slugging; there is a trap/skeet range on top of the mountain above Soddy Daisy; forgot the name; I haven't lived in the Chattanooga area since 2003

IIRC, the Prentice Cooper range is 50 yards on the left, 100 yards in the center, and 10, 15, 18 yards on the right...would have been nice to put the berm back a bit and get 25 yards out of it;

I completely forgot directions on how to get there; when I ran low on ammo and Walmart didn't have something I wanted, I stopped at ?Darr's Shooting Supplies? on the north side to restock on my way out to Prentice Cooper

There is now a Mega Walmart on the way Prentice Cooper on Signal Mtn Rd.

I didn't know there were so many members from around here... We need to comandeer Prentice Cooper some Saturday.

That Walmart sells ammo, too, so you can stock up on the way to the range.

There is also the public outdoor range over near Benton. It depends on which side of Chattanooga you live for the run to make sense. It was a very nice range until the idiots shot up all the supports with shotguns. Now you need to bring your own target supports.

I've been to both the Prentice Cooper range (by Signal Mountain) and the Spring Creek range (out past Benton). I prefer the Prentice Cooper range--mostly because it's closer to me, but I also find that the target stands are kept up a bit better (read:repaired and replaced) than at the Spring Creek facility.

The pistol range at Spring Creek has just one distance--25 yards, I think--with some sand-filled plastic barrels at closer ranges, presumably for setting up your own target stands. Prentice Cooper, as mentioned above, has target stands placed at three distances.

Rifle ranges at both places are roughly equivalent. Both have 100 yard ranges, with target stands. Prentice Cooper also has a separate 50-yard range, with target stand, while Spring Creek has a dirt berm at, I think, 30 yards, without a target stand. One disadvantage to the Prentice Cooper range is that all lanes face due west, meaning that late in the day, you get a face full of sun while aiming at your targets.

One more strike against Prentice Cooper is the frequency of closures. Every Tuesday and Wednesday (which is good, because it's for maintenance), Sunday mornings (***?) and for frequent hunts on and around the property. Despite all that, it's still my favorite local place to shoot.

One big advantage to Spring Creek, though, is the bathrooms. While Prentice Cooper has a single primitive, doorless and odoriferous outhouse, Spring Creek has...well, a pair of glorified outhouse. This alone may make the Spring Creek trip worth it, particularly if you're taking along ladyfriends or new shooters with small bladders.

One last thing--"Dave in GA" is a liar. There is never any .223 brass to be found at the Prentice Cooper range. Particularly on Saturday afternoons. No .45 ACP, either. And if you dont' believe me and come looking for it, I'll beat you with my broom and bucket...:rolleyes:

Odds are, I have met some of you guys who gather brass. I know when I was shooting some XM193, and had LC brass I wasn't collecting, I had two of you brass hounds loving me all day long.

Another newbie to the fourms here. I travel to Prentice a couple times a week. Love the place other than there needs to be some more etiquette rules posetd for new shooters, that way they don't get shot when they walk out onto a hot range. I've seen way too much of this latley.
