§ 14‑415.16. Renewal of permit.

The holder of a permit shall apply to renew the permit at least 30 days prior to its expiration date by filing with the sheriff of the county in which the person resides a renewal form provided by the sheriff's office, a notarized affidavit stating that the permittee remains qualified under the criteria provided in this Article, a newly administered full set of the permittee's fingerprints, and a renewal fee. Upon receipt of the completed renewal application, including the permittee's fingerprints, and the appropriate payment of fees, the sheriff shall determine if the permittee remains qualified to hold a permit in accordance with the provisions of G.S. 14‑415.12. The permittee's criminal history shall be updated, and the sheriff may waive the requirement of taking another firearms safety and training course. If the permittee applies for a renewal of the permit within 30 days of its expiration date and if the permittee remains qualified to have a permit under G.S. 14‑415.12, the sheriff shall renew the permit. No fingerprints shall be required for a renewal permit if the applicant's fingerprints were submitted to the State Bureau of Investigation after June 30, 2001, on the Automated Fingerprint Information System (AFIS) as prescribed by the State Bureau of Investigation. (1995, c. 398, s. 1; c. 507, s. 22.2(b); 2000‑140, s. 103; 2000‑191, s. 1.) Just wondering how smoothly it went.

I see that I won't need to get fingerprinted again since I did it with the electronic method.

I see that it's the sheriff's option to have you take the class again. Anyone here have a sheriff that required that?

I also see that you need a notarized affidavit. Is that just a form they have that you need to sign in front of a notory?

I renewed in Cumberland County, no big deal here. Just went in to Sheriff's Office and got their renewal package and returned it per their instructions.
I don't know how quick or efficient other counties are.

Time befoe last it was no problem.Just paid my money & waited. Last time I had let it lapse for more than a month (moved & didn't get notice from the sheriff) and had to start all over from square 1.

I'm from NC, but my permit is good till 2011, so...

I didn't realize that you COULD have to take the class again...so hopefully it's not too common around here.

Also didn't realize you got a notice, thought it was something you just had to keep up with.

The only thing I've heard (online) about it is that it pays to re-up MORE than 90 days before it goes out, just in case.

I renewed mine about two years ago in Orange County. It took about 3 weeks and was no hassle at all. I don't really remember the paperwork, but I remember it not being a big deal.

I renewed mine last year in Alamance county and it was no big deal. Paperwork and fees and wait three weeks. I have been told by more than one person to not let your permit expire or you will have to take the CCW class again and reapply like a new applicant. I don't know if this is true, but it made me go a month early to renew to make sure I did not have to do all that.

I wonder when the earliest you can renew is? I have about 6 months left on mine. I might drop by the sheriff's office next time I get a weekday off to see if I can pick up the paperwork.

Sheriff office in Catawba County told me to apply 6 weeks before expiration and only have to pay a renewal fee.

I did not receive a notice that it was due to expire. Had to remember it all by myself.
Note: Since a nearby older couple had recently been abducted from their home and taken to an ATM for a midnight withdrawal, my wife did not go through her eye rolling act when I said I was going down to renew the CC permit.

We renewed our permits a year or two ago. I honestly don't remember the process at all.... so it must not have been too involved. I think I'd remember having a packet and tracking down a notary, so I'm assuming we did all of the paperwork at the WCSO and they notarized it there.

I received my notice by mail (Wake County) about 2 months prior to the expiration of my CHP. I waited until 4 1/2 weeks prior to exp. to go down to the sheriff's office to renew. One form...right there...no Notary...paid with a check.

I was told it would take 7-8 weeks. Got it back yesterday after waiting only 5 weeks.

Smooth...

And, bought a new Sig within an hour of getting it.

You scoundrel! A beautiful one at that. Can't wait to see it in person.

Mine is due next summer. I hope I don't forget, because I kind of doubt I will get any renewal notification in this county.
