Okay. I am sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the subject. I have plenty of handguns. I have an AR-15, Olympic, but still AR. I don't know anything else about rifles. I use to have a 7mm. But I need a good hunting-type rifle. No dream $2000 guns either, around $700-$800. Okay have at it boys.

So, would you like a .22 LR or a .458 mag?

What are you hunting? What are the ranges? What is your preference? Do you have a specific caliber in mind? Is that price range including a scope? Will you even use a scope?

What will you be hunting. Action preferrence? What type of terrain will you be hunting in? Necessary info for an opinion.

well, I probably won't go hunting, but if I did it would be deer. I am thinking more of a well-rounded armory. I just want to be able to go hunt if I need to. I'm thinking the rifle equivalent to the Glock 22

I'm a big fan of CZ. Great, classic rifles.

I am actually the biggest fan of CZ pistols. I don't know much about the rifles.

Then you have taste, my friend.

Their rifles are just as good as their pistols. :)

Well that was pretty easy then. I was going to say the equivalent of the cz75b before, but I didn't just because the Glock has more recognition. And thanks for putting up the link right to the big bores. I already have mine picked out; the 550 American. Anything else I should know?

Why did you let the 7mm go. It was probably as good as anything you could replace it with.

November 5, 2007, 12:55 AM
For deer size game 243, 308 or for European feel the 6.5X55. And yes CZ does make some fine rifles.

Get yourself "Tikka T3 tactical"
No better rifle.
(gotta give an alternative to you CZ fans:) )
Actually I'm CZ fan too, I got 75B and 122 sport.

REMINGTON 700 30-06
I prefer the 7mm(.284) calibers to .30 (.308) calibers, but still if I were trying to name one caliber rifle that could do almost anything, I would have to say the 30-06 is the most versatile round. For the brand I prefer Remington 700 rifles. The different variants (stainless or matte, fluted or not, matte or blue, ADL or CDL) is mostly personal preference

Personally I have two big game hunting rifles. One in 7mm-08 for 200 yards or less and a 7mm STW for hunting large fields or long ranges. Both are Remington 700 BDL with stainless fluted barrels.

For hunting what?

For just deer, I would go with a Remington 700 in .308.

Anything else I should know?
I'd go with 30-06, personally.TONS of ammo choices available, can be found in ANY store that sells ammo, and as far as rifle rounds go, its fairly inexpensive. Also, it should be plenty of gun for anything in the continental U.S..That said, your gun, get what makes you smile, with the possible exception of 22-250 (I say this because I dont know ANYTHING about it, so nobody freak out on me...:)), anything on the list for the cz550 American you like will be FINE for deer for sure.

The Glock 22 of rifles would be

Remington 700 in .30-06

Rock solid, indestructible action
Accurate and dependable
Comes in a million configurations
Cartridge is viable for anything from varmits to moose
Cartridge is ubiquitous...you can find them any and everywhere

Savage. As accurate as anything mentioned, with a better trigger. Unless you're talking about the CZ single set. And you'll have a couple of hundred bucks left over for a better scope.

November 5, 2007, 10:46 AM
first off, I would go with something in the most common cals; 762.39 243 270 30.06 308 3030 7 mag, and let us throw in 6.5 swede. All these cals are easy to find, can be had anywhere at stores, gunshows , etc., also they can be had relatively cheap.
Now if you want to be able to take down anything in N. america, then a 30.06 with 200 plus grain bullets will do the job, if you want to keep it dear size or smaller, then the 243 will fill the bill. the 270 and the 308 will do everything else.
Lastly , you should be able to go to any of the big box stores, and get a rifle with scope package for 500 bucks or less. such as howa, savage, remmy, winny, mossberg, etc. You may realize, that as a huge cz fan, I have 4 , the cz is beautiful, light, and super accurate.

CZ 550 FS in .308 is on my wish list. Gotta make it through X-Mass first though.

I have at least 1 of every major caliber and rifle maker out there, If you are looking for a rifle for general, medium-large game in North America the .30-06 or the more expensive,.338 Win mag are the only 2 choices. To all those whom disagree, I own many others, .308 win, 7mm Rem, .270 win, 300RUM and rem... All are very nice, and each has a use. I love my 308s, i have 4 of them but if you want to take a moose at 250 yards, It would be better to have a little more power...not that a 308, 270 or 7mm couldn't do it.
