View Full Version : Does anyone carry their CCW at 2 O'clock?

I generally carry the CZ-P01 between 4 and 5 o'clock (ie -behind the right hip) outside the waistband. For this to work properly, I usually wear a light jacket or long shirt (no problem).
However, on a whim, I tried to carry at 2 o'clock and it was MUCH more comfortable while riding in a car and it was just a concealed (with the same light jacket).
Does anyone else do this? good idea? bad idea?
thank you

I carry crossdraw which is much better riding in my truck or car and is easier to get to if need be. I don't like the 3-4 o'clock positions and the crossdraw is much better for me at the 9-10 o'clock position which is my main carry spot...

I carry IWB at 2 with a XD40SC very comfy and concealed

Yup, I do and have for nearly 8 years now. :)
Don't trust the jacket not to flip back far enough to expose the gun, though. Try using a closed-front cover garment, or purchasing a tuckable holster so all that would show if it did flip back is just the loop.

Wouldn't carrying at 2:00 put the holster directly over your right thigh? I can't see how you would ever draw from that position.
I carry at 3:00 with my holster sitting right on my hip.

Yup, that's where it puts the gun all right.
How to draw from there? Like this:
http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=66738&stc=1&d=1194282352
(Anchor the non-dominant hand. Keep your finger off the trigger and far away from the trigger guard.)

I'm not worried about drawing form that position as much as trying to sit down.

I do the appendix carry (IWB) with a Kahr K9. Works fine sitting or standing. I cover with a t-shirt only.

Short barrelled firearms are most comfy there. Similarly, a holster with a slight muzzle-forward cant tends to feel better too.

I'm somewhere around 1 o'clock, with a P229 in an Uncle Mike's. I don't like 2 o'clock because it digs into my thigh. At 1 o'clock, it's comfortable to sit down and walk with. Plus, having a loaded firearm so close to your bits and pieces ENSURES trigger discipline. :D

I do a 3:30-4 o'clock type carry, most of the time; whereas if the firearm
accidentally goes off while riding in a OWB, the worst it can do is graze
my rear end~! ;)
While in the 2 o'clock position, if an accidental discharge were to occur
chances here it might strike that major artery in the leg, and you could
end up bleeding to death~! :scrutiny: :(

I wear mine at 3:00 or even 4:00. If I wore it at 2:00, the hammer would most likely puncture my fat roll when I sit down and I would become another "gun statistic!"

Yes, that's true. That's why smart people carry a modern firearm in good condition, and carry it in a secure holster which covers the entire trigger guard area.

In the winter I carry a Mod 19 S&W 2 1/2" barreled .357 magnum at 1:00 IWB. Not only is it more comfortable when seated in a car, but in the saddle on horse back too...

I move the gun to 2 o'clock if I'm taking a nap in the car on trips, rest stops and the like. It's normally 3-4 o'clock.

Hey pax My Friend-
You reminded me, I use to work with a plain clothed narcotics officer who
carried his Glock 17 9m/m at 2 o'clock; NO HOLSTER, with the weapon just
stuck down inside his trousers~! :(
I use holsters everytime I carry; regardless of position~!

Glock? No holster? Positioned over the femoral artery?
That is a Very Bad Idea.

I tried "appendix carry" last year, almost by accident...and now use it all the time.
Compared to behind-the-hip, I find it (in order of importance to me):
1. less likely to print during bending/twisting motions
2. quicker to draw and bring on target
3. less likely for anyone else to accidentally feel it (e.g. from unexpected hugs or the 'gentle hand on the back' as someone passes you in a crowded area).
4. more comfortable and accessible when sitting (desk chair, car seat, etc.).
Everyone's proportions and CCW pieces are different, but it works for me (with a good holster). If the barrel on my CCW piece was even 1/4" longer it would probably dig into my leg uncomfortably.
Unless I ever start carrying a 5" 1911, I doubt I'll ever go back to behind-the-hip carry

No...That's 3:00, Rantingredneck...
No it's not. 3:00 is straight out to the side. That is forward of my hipbone and to the front. Maybe 2:30, but definitely not 3:00. I can't do 3:00 and pull it off very well.

I go 11 o'clock, as I like the cross draw, but everything else you mentioned is exactly what I have, use, and practice.. lol
But I do like the "quick ability" to make a quick holster change of position/s if needed.

Right handed 11 o'clock? I might try that. It never really occurred to me. When I decided on the 1 o'clock, it was after an afternoon of mozambiques from a concealed position, and that seemed the compromise of comfort, concealability, and rapid draw. (because face it, if comfort isn't considered, it becomes an issue). I practice drawing from the 0100 about 10 times a day, and try to every day, just as a way to stay keen.
Also, I run a drill where I pull my wallet right handed and then toss it forward whilst lifting shirt, saying "here man, take my wallet" and drawing from 0100. I can toss my wallet forward and be ready to shoot before it hits the ground on a smooth movement. I feel that the 0100 caters to that well.

I want to be able to access the firearm with either hand. Since I am not very flexible, behind the hip is completely out of the question.
Cross draw would probably work better for me (no holster to try it with yet), but between 1 and 2 is what works best so far. Muzzle forward cant for sure, else it digs in to my leg. Which, incidentally, pushes the grip way out from my body, printing badly when sitting down.

I'll carry at about anytime of day I can:what:
Seriously, I like appendix carry for my 642. I use a Fist kydex k-8 holster which has an adjustable cant and is tuckable. appendix carry is about 1:30.

I have to change mine, as like Lonestar49, I'm more like 1:00 too...I use a Kellogg Leather IWB holster for that Mod 19.

May not look it in the pics but it's definitely not 3:00. There's a belt loop there on those shorts so it would be impossible to carry 3:00 with them unless I threaded the holster loops on either side of it. There's also a lot of me behind that gun. Can't be printed or "made" carrying from the rear, which is why I don't carry 3:00. I'm wide enough without adding a Ruger P90 to the mix. :uhoh:
Yes I understand the clock system, I get that the zipper is 12:00 which makes straight out to the right side 3:00. :D

Funny...a friend of mine carries his gun there. Is the position you're talking about in front of the point of the hip or behind the hip?
He has a more "successful body" type and carries just *behind* the hip. He can carry anything from a Kahr PM9 to a Glock 20 in that position. I found a Glock 17 to be "possible" and fairly comfortable. The G20 was a bit thick, but its grip was totally hidden. It's a good location, but not as fast as appendix carry (in front of the point of hip to centerline).

yes, that is my preferred carry position (IWB / OWB).
however, it's a bit of a challenge to manage the whole enchilada when you have to disrobe to pinch a stinky or pee sitting down (ladies).

I've carried appendix before, but since I sit most of the day, I find crossdraw is just more comfortable. I do however keep a fixed blade handy at 2:00 for emergency disembowelments should I not have time to draw and fire.
