Pellet lodges in boy's brain after shooting
Last Updated Mon, 14 Jul 2003 21:53:53
TORONTO - No surgery has been scheduled for a five-year-old boy who was shot in the face with a high-powered pellet gun, doctors in Toronto said Monday.

The boy is now listed in fair condition at the Hospital for Sick Children after the shooting Sunday outside the Molson Indy.

Police gather evidence

Police say Kadin Kendall was at a bus stop with his mother along with the post-race crowd in Toronto's waterfront area when he was shot.

The pellet was fired from a moving car and lodged in the boy's brain, entering just above his right eye.

He has retained vision in the eye and will not require surgery to remove the pellet at this time, said a hospital spokesperson.

A 27-year-old man was also hit in the forearm with a pellet during the 30-minute shooting spree. He was treated in hospital, said police.

Three suspects were reportedly arrested as their car was stuck in traffic.

Two 18-year-old males and a 17-year-old male appeared in court Monday in connection with the shooting. Jake Joseph Mercure and Stephen Collins are charged with aggravated assault and discharging an air pistol with intent to wound.

The 17-year-old cannot be identified.

It can not be a good story without ridiculous adjectives

Some pellet guns deserve the "high powered" description. There are PCP (precharged pneumatic) airguns that can take down medium sized game.

PCP, multishot rifles as powerful or more powerful than 22lr.

Just a couple examples.

My personal air-rifle is no slouch either. It'll launch a .22 pellet at 800fps, give or take a few fps. It will shoot clean through an empty soup can at 25yds or deeply dent one of those green propane tanks you use for camping (empty of course).

These aren't your son's Red Ryders...

Chris

Edit to add: In the UK, any airgun generating more than 12 ft/lbs of energy requires an FAL to own. My airgun is the FAL version, there is also a non-FAL version for sale in the UK.

There are quite a few air rifles that exceed 1100 fps (usually with .177). Don't know of any air pistols that do, though.

High-powered rifles...

High-powered assault weapons...

High-powered handguns...

High-powered pellet guns...

Will someone show me what a LOW-POWERED gun looks like?...:scrutiny:

It was the law in Canada that any airrifle/pistol with a velocity of 500 fps or faster was a "firearm" and treated like a real gun. I don't think that has changed.

So if its a "high powered" air rifle, existing gun laws apply.

If not, its not a high powered gun.

It's Col. Sebastian Moran, back from the dead. Where are Holmes and Watson when we need them?

In my opinion, assault with a deadly weapon minimally. Attempted homicide is better.

I am amazed, I do think that this adjective was warranted if the weapon was as high powered as some of those you have indicated.

That said I am still annoyed by excessive unwarranted use of adjectives by Journalists.

If it would have been a low-powered pellet gun I guess they would have taken the kid to the Hospital for Healthy Children.

Can't blame 'em, its just too cold for proper brain function up there in Canada.

Fired from a moving car, add the velocity of the pellet plus the velocity of the car. Most people can't throw a large pumpkin hard enough to really harm someone but throw one from the back of a pickup moving at 60mph and you have a "high-powered vegetable"... sort of like Ted Kennedy.

As if the injury wasn't bad enough, the kid has to be subjected to Canada's system of socialized medicine. Hitlery's vision for American healthcare.
