How many mags, per gun, do you have?

For my BHP, I have one 13-round magazine. I have been planning to get three or four 17-round South African mags, but my Dad insists that you only need two, and to ever buy more than that would be foolish. I happen do disagree, but rather than argue fruitlessly for the rest of my life, I just let it go. I happen to think that one needs at least three mags, one in the gun and two spares. And I don't think it could hurt to have one or two more.

I'd love to hear what you have, and your views on this.

Thanks,
Wes

Minimum of 3 per defensive handgun. Second one is in case the one in the gun fails during defensive use. Third one is in case a mag ever breaks you never have less than two.

can never have to many...

I have 4 for my Ruger MKII
for my P-11:
2 10 rounders
2 12 rounders (what I carry)
2 15 rounders

4 for my P-32

at least 5 for my 1911.

around 8 for my SAR-1 (AK)

you never know when a mag spring might start to get weak. When you notice it at the range, mark it and replace. Until you get it replaced, you have spares.... :)

1911: 5x8 rnds, 1x7 rnd
Ruger P89: 4x15 rnd, 1x30 rnd
Astra A70: 3x7 rnd
P32: 1x7rnd, 1x10 rnd; also have a mag extension for the 7 rnd.
Lorcin 22: 2x7 rnd; not a defensive gun, but extra mag nonetheless
Glock 22: 2x10 rnd

Long guns:
SAR-1: 1x75 rnd, 1x40 rnd, 8x30 rnd, 1x10 rnd, 1x5 rnd
M-1 Carbine: 5x15 rnd, 2x30 rnd
AR-7: 2x8 rnd

My bare minimum is two, and I prefer to have as many as I can afford, especially with my defensive guns. If I actually owned the Glock, rather than it being a loaner, I'd probably have at least two more.

A rail car full. The more, the better.

To me, it depends on what purpose of pistol is. My training pistols I have a dozen a piece. For my primary carry gun I have 2 dozen training mags and 3 dozen carry mags. For my bug, I have 4 training mags and (I think) 10 carry mags.

Mags are (to a much smaller degree) like ammo. If your gun has any problems feeding or ejecting it can be magazine related.

So you want to try various brands. Once you've done that, you have a whole bunch of mags... and it would be silly to get rid of any of them! :p

Seriously, my minimum is 3 mags per handgun. One OEM and two quality aftermarket.

I have a friend that has a rule of thumb re: magazines. Any time he buys a new type of firearm (as in a make/model that is not supported by magazines he already has in house) he spends 50% of the cost on the firearm on magazines.

I am not sure about going that far, but if you are serious about shooting magazine feed firearms you will discover that the main area of malfunctions are magazine related.

Buy as amny quality magazines as you can possibly afford and if money is tight buy the gunshow junk for practice. This way you carry reliable mags and get to practice malfunctions clearences during practice sessions.

I have more high end magazines for my 1911's than I care to count. I also have at least four quality magazines for every magazine feed firearm that I own.

Well my minimum is at least 6 factory magazines but think 10 is nice round number to strive for.

The above goes for rifles too but I think I am leaning towards 15-20 to strive for with the AK and AR.

My mag count runs the gamut.

I have one for a .25 ACP Bauer which I haven't carried in years and shoot rarely.

Two for a Beretta 21A that I carried a little and shoot now and then.

Five or seven for my M1A. I'd like to get more.

About the same for an M1 Carbine.

10-12 .45 ACP magazines. I can't remember exactly bought a few extras and got one or two with guns I acquired.

I have 12-15 for my Browning HP. For a while every time I could get them for $1 per round ($13 for a 13 round mag, etc) I'd buy one or two.

I have a box full of eight round en-bloc clips for my M1. I never counted them but figure they'll work till I can find a good deal.

I have a Madsen M50 subgun for which mags were cheap and available while the gun was in transfer. Before it arrived I had 40 mags. I haven't tried them all yet, but I know I won't run out.

4 for my MkII (2x10, 2x12)
Something like 10 for my 1911. Need more, I think.
Haven't counted recently for the AR, but somewhere around 20 USGI (almost half 20 and half 30 rounders). Not counting the two USA brand AR15/180 mags I first got for it which are now disassembled and in a box awaiting their end.

I've been meaning to buy some full-caps for my P89.

Currently, I have

2 10rd factory mags for my P89 (want to get 2 15rd pre-bans)
2 10rd factory mags for my MkII
2 10rd factory mags for my KT P11
1 7rd and 2 8rd mags for my 1911 (will probably get 2 more of the 8rds)
3 10rd mags for my 10/22 (avoided getting hi-caps for it because of reliability concerns)

My other guns don't have detachable magazines. I have no desire to convert my SKS to take AK mags - I like it the way it is (e.g. reliable)

In regards to handguns:

6 - 3 to use and 3 to have as spares.

If they are hicap then 9
3 ten rounders for practice
3 to carry
3 spare
And as many more as I can justify or scrounge.

Adjust up for factors such as a carry gun, A gun I like to shoot often, A gun they don't make any more etc

Additionally this is 6or 9 minimum
per gun

For example I have about a dozen full size 1911 and that makes for allot of wilson 47 series'

2 glock 19's so 18 mags in total

I have only one handgun - a Glock 17L. Currently I have five 17/19rd and four 31/33rd mags for it, enough for 219 ready rounds.
I think I need some more 19 rounders yet.

I have four mags for my P7M8, eight mags for the 1911, and two mags for the SIG P232 and Kel-Tec P32. Two mags is the bare minimum, altough I prefer at least three for a primary carry gun. More is better. One is none.

I currently have 6 for my Browning Hi-Power and 4 for my Buckmark.

I prefer 4 as a bare minimum. I think a dozen would be getting excessive, for me. So basically 4-8 I like.

For my primary detachable mag firearms I have:

1911- 10 Wilson Carry mags and 2 Training/beater mags
AR- 15+ of assorted USGI and Thermold

I want both of those numbers to 30 ASAP. Mags break, get lost, etc. For fun guns I would insist on at least five.

Marko, are you looking for heel-release, 8-round P7 mags?

No, I am looking for the side-release 8-round magazines for the P7M8. I finally got my own tactical staple gun, and I wouldn't mind finding some reasonably-priced spare magazines for it. Over here, they are among the most expensive single-stack mags...$50 or so.

I don't see much utility in mags beyond 5 or so, and the most I actually have is 4. I can load a lot of ammo for the cost of a couple of mags. Maybe my perspective would be different if any of my guns were for defense...

If I have less than 6 for it you can be sure I bought the gun just to have it. I'm down to 8 for my 1911s only because I haven't been shooting them, will re-Wilsonize as soon as I set the Glocks down for awhile. For the Glock 17/34 I think I have 10-10rd mags and 10 big mags. Several are 22 rd types. The AR is the worst offender, 40+ mags for one gun. I have about 18 for my 2 BHPs. I'm good for basing gun buys on what acoutrements I already have, commonality in mags between the multiple variants of a gun theme saves money to buy more ammo.

I expect to get worse when the mag ban dies, I will be out over 1-2K in current market value of mags, so I will console myself by buying more guns and magazines. :D

Minimum of 3 factory mags in maximum allowed capacity that feeds reliably. Ideally, also have misc. parts such as replacement mag springs and followers.

Jaco

One should have a minimum of 3 per carry gun. 2 to carry, one for a spare kept empty, and rotating it on a monthly basis.

Zach S
July 17, 2003, 07:45 AM
For the Kimber/BUL, I've got two ten rounders, three prebans (14 rounds). When I get the rescomp mag release, I'll have no ten rounders and four prebans (para mags).

The Ruger has one ten rounder, one pre-ban (range gun, never carried).

I've got about a dozen GI mags for my GM 1911's, two Chip McCormick 8 rounders.

For my officers model I've got two Wilson 7 shot and two or three 8 rounders (i have three, one is missing though), factory mag is floating around somewhere.

I've got two speedloaders and four or 5 speedstrips for my .38.

Now, for guns I dont have:

Four Para P14-45 prebans (previosly mentioned, will be used in the Kimber), two preban para P16-40s, two preban Para P13-45, one ruger Mini-14 (20 round i think?), three or four AR15 20 rounders, one 30 round. Someday, when my car isnt sucking up so much money, I'll get the guns that go with them...

Each 1911 has at the very least 4 Some 7s and some 10s.
6-10s and 4/pre-bans for the high-cap (so far working on more).
Revolvers have 2 speed loaders each.

for a high cap gun, 10 mags plus 1 in the gun. For a 1911, 15 is the minimum. for a mouse gun or odd gun, 5 in the minimum. I don't carry them all at once but it is the most fragile part of the system and wears out the most often.

For my 1911:
3 McCormick Shooting Stars
2 McCormick Power Mags
3 Wilson 47Ds (One is busted though :()

All are 8 rounders.

3 standard 10 round factory mags. (Soooo expensive!)

1) I am within walking distance of my indoor shooting range, which stocks (at my request) Wilson mags (also McCormick and others). Some of you want a lot of mags in case one breaks.

I would simply walk over and buy one.

Why should I stock them if they are not being used, if I can get my store to do it for me, for free? Plus, they will be "new" instead of having been in my closet for x number of years.

(note: I carry one in the gun, two on the belt. I only have one gun for carry, and I practice with what I carry, so all mags are used every practice session)

2) Cslinger and others state that they specifically want "factory" mags. I happen to have a Kimber, and the factory mag is not nearly as good as the Wilson. It is also a 7-shot mag, and I prefer the Wilson 8 rounders. Why do you find "factory" mags more desirable than aftermarket?

MoNsTeR
July 17, 2003, 06:57 PM
Factory mags are more desirable for every gun but the 1911. Because SIG, Glock, Beretta, S&W, CZ, etc. produce quality mags for their own guns, the only space for competition is on price. And since the aftermarket mag makers don't know the guns they're making mags for nearly so well as the original manufacturers do, quality suffers. The major exception is MecGar, who actually makes the OEM mags for CZ, Browning, and others.

Why the 1911 makers can't get it through their heads to include quality mags is beyond me.

I have 12 7-round mags for my Auto Ordnance 1911A1. I keep all of them loaded all the time in a small canvas bag. When I go shooting I just grab the bag. I carry 7+1 for CCW with a spare mag in a belt slide carrier.

July 17, 2003, 08:37 PM
Dumb question: why isn't this in autoloaders? How many magazine-fed revolvers are there?

Now if the title said CLIPS, well then, I had about two dozen moon clips for my S&W 610 Classic.

:neener:

Trebor
July 18, 2003, 03:07 AM
The absolute bare minimum anyone should have for an autoloader is two because if you only have one, and the mag goes bad, the gun is now useless.

After that, I think the more the better, but the upper limit depends on the person and the situation. For my defensive or training guns, I want to have at least 4 to 6 per gun. For my C&R "fun guns," such as my P-38, two mags is plenty.

The only drawback about having TOO many mags per gun is that now you have money tied up in mags that you could have spent on something else, like more guns.

Zach S
July 18, 2003, 07:18 AM
Why the 1911 makers can't get it through their heads to include quality mags is beyond me. Its probably crossed their minds, but since most ppl know use wilson or chip mags, i guess they though "why should we include a quality mag if the buyer is gonna use a wilson or chip anyway?"
