New stand, new cartridge...

Well after having a bit of luck with the .30-30 during the early season, our plan for the regular season has changed. We put up a stand that can cover the entire valley we hunt, so it looks like I'll be dusting off the .270 (Savage 111... no "crap-u-trigger.) Picture 1 shows the view looking west, and the approximate posistion for my early season shot. The thicket at the far end is an old apple orchard, and there is a large corn field just over the ridge. The deer have been moving about a quarter of the way down from the ridgeline in the morning to bed on the eastern end. Should be a good hunt, though a bit of a change. I'm so used to walking or parking my kiester against a tree I won't know what to do with myself sitting in a stand.

What is the "rail" in the first photo? It looks like a guard rail on a road.

That would be the Amish expressway.

that isn't a public road in the first pic is it? If someone got caught in a stand that close to a road around here they'd get locked up pretty damn quick.

Otherwise, looks like a great stand, good luck with it.

Do you bow hunt or have a cross bow?

Yes sir, with an old Fred Bear recurve. Crossbows are limited to handicapped folks up here.

Even if it was, regs state 50' from the centerline of the road.

Then you should be fine...In FL, we have to be 500 feet from a road, otherwise you will get into a heap of trouble! Just wanted to keep you out of the slammer....

John, you fully reallize that the .270 and our fancy-schmancy tree stand are doomed to fail. The busted up 30-30 and 5 gallon pail in the mud were the winning aspects to our hunt! Oh, that and Pearsons Nut Rolls, you can't hunt without them.

Yeah it does seem like the deer come into view as soon as you start stuffing your face with one of those nut rolls. And good to see you back on here Mike!
