45-70 and less mess?

I'm using Varget for loading my 45-70, mainly because I can use the same powder for .223 Rem. I'm using 42 grains under a 405gr. LFP bullet, and always have lots of unburnt powder kernels to clean. It doesn't leave a mess in the barrel, but they are always plastered on the internals. I have read that sometimes loads that don't generate enough pressure will burn dirty. The Hodgdon 2007 manual lists 50gr. as a max. Should I keep increasing the charge or would I get better results by switching to a different powder entirely?

I personally like IMR4895 for the smokeless 45/70 loads, you can use this powder in every rifle cartridge there is, not always the optimal choice but it will still work.

For my hunting loads in .45-70, I prefer IMR 3031. The moose I got with it last month in Northern Alberta was about as dead as they get. It produces fine accuracy and burns completely.

Hope this helps.

Imr 4198 burns clean in the 45-70. Imr 3031 does when pressure is high enough.

I use IMR 4198 and it is a clean burn. For target loads I use IMR Trail Boss, it is also very clean.

Thanks guys. I'll have to look for one of those next time I go to the gun shop.
