the accuracy and general fit and finish of my Russian sks is quite a bit better than any of the other 3 I own or have owned from other countries (China and Yugoslaovia).Could just be my particular one though, as I've never personally handled of fired another Russian one, but from what I hear in general, this is usually the case.No idea on ak's, all I have or have ever handled or fired is my Romanian clone (WASR-10 GP).I really love it though. No issues at all in several years now.

Whats the deal with the valmet? For some reason they are the only "ak's" that are exempt from the prohibited list for canada. Any AK or varient is illegal except for the valmet, or most of them anyways.

Are they still in production?

Sadly, no. The Finns decided it was cheaper to buy AKs from China.

Nicest AKs: Norinco, Valmet, Galil, Arsenal, Madi, Vepr. (not in any particular order)

I think that the Russian SKS is a little more accurate than the Chinese by a small margin, and the Yugo by a larger variable. Most definitely the Chinese and Russian are probably matched as far as durability and dependability goes. I owned a Yugo for a short time and found it very unreliable due to the gas valve for the grenade launcher. My Chinese (Nornico) is the most dependable rifle I own. I've shot all three SKS's and cannot find the sweet spot for any of them. I love to shoot them, but I couldn't hit sand if I fell off of a camel.

Considering that Izhmash has the one and only patent on the AK design, the Russians. But that probably wouldn't change too much... just look at the Saiga and you'll see.

The Russians make the best AK's, but the Chinese SKS's are nothing to sneeze at.

Russian and other variant sks' are chrome lined, making them easier to clean and less prone to jamming. Yugo's aren't but that usually doesn't make too much of a difference since i don't shoot thousands of rounds each range session. I like the way Yugo's look the most. Chinese ones look like toys and are often missing bayonets. Russians are usually painted black and/or are in bad condition. Accuracy i can't speak of since i have only shot yugos which wasn't terrible.

I find it odd that a patent would even exist on the AK now, given that the Soviet Union no longer exists, the entity that would have registered a patent, and that a patent would even be viable after 50 years.

The Russian version of the SKS is really outstanding. I like it better than the Chinese SKS' I owned in the 80s and 90s. I don't think it is any more accurate, but it is a piece of craftsmanship from the 1950s that shows quality work and attention to detail.

Best SKS IMO is a Russian one followed by a Yugoslavian one then a Bulgarian one and lastly a Chinese made one.

IMO the best AK is the Galil followed closely by the Valmet then either a Russian or a Yugoslavian with Polish Bulgarian and some US made reproductions being on the well built AK rifle list.;)

Bulgarian one

I don't think that there are Bulgarian sks', you might be thinking of the Albanian or Romanian.

I am not an expert in SKS and AKs, however I do own an SKS made in Yugoslavia and it is drop dead accurate, reliable and has not ever malfunctioned in my time owning it...shooting well over 1000 rounds flawlessly. As for accuracy, it basically shoots through the same hole at 50 yards and about 1moa at 100 yards with a cheap scope.

Sweetest shooter: Yugo sks
Beat the **** out of them: Norinco!

Yugo is the best deal. They just work. you can replace the gas tube and take the grenade launcher off if you really care. Just keep the little valve clean if you don't. Very accurate and nice.

I don't know about the SKS.

In US imported AKs I'd says quality would go to either Russia (Saiga and Vepr), China (Norinco and Polytech) and/or Bulgaria (Arsenal Inc.).

I like both my Yugo and Chinese SKS. The Yugo was one of the unissued ones.

As far as AKs go, I did a homebuild on a few Romanian "G" kits and a Hungarian AMD-65. The AMD-65 is darn near a tack driver with the South African surplus 7.62x39 from the late 80's.

USA The US made AKM's are the best!

Yugoslavia for SKSs, for accuracy anyways

probably the smoother trigger, non chrome lined bore and tighter tolerances, but I get 2-3" groups

SKS; Russian, China (early military not late commercial production, the early productions were very close to the Russians) Yugo, Albania, Romania

AKM; Yugo (original import and then military) , Russian (military not commercial Saiga) , Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian (military not commercial SAR/WASR) Hungarian, China (military), Russian commercial, China commercial, Any screw build, Romanian commercial

For the AK variants; Chech VZ58, Valmet, Galil

All of the military AKMs will be built from parts set as military AKs cannot be imported intact so quality is going to depend greatly upon reciever used and experience level of builder however the basic heart of the kit is what is being ranked that being the quality of parts in original rifle....

Yugo SKS's look the best to me, and mine shoots 3-4" at 100yards. I do not like Norinco's even if they function fine, and russian SKS's are nice too.

Not sure about AK's.
