I need a sight to go on a flat top AR. any recommendations for an acceptable dot scope or something for around 50 bucks? or can I just mount a 4x scope on there for the short term?

Truglo red dot sights work great and are cheap.

This is what you'll need if you want to co-witness with your iron sights

A 4x scope will work well too.

I've never looked through the sights of a co-witnessed rifle.

What does the sight picture look like?

Imagine your regular iron sign picture, but on the very tip of the front sight post there is a glowing red dot.

I have been itching to try one of the Truglo red dots with the 2x magnification. Anyone use one yet, seems like just enough for my middle aged eyes. Bill

You may want to look for an older Tasco Pro Point a Bushnell or a Millett red dot sight they turn up used at gun shows and at some online auction sites.

Also for not much more look into the ATN red dot reflex sight or a used C-more with the Weaver base.

CDNN leapers scope for $59. I have one and love it.

Waterhouse is exactly right. Or, if you go the route I did with a flip up front and rear sight, you don't see it unless you flip them both up.
