That's one thing that the M16/4 series is better then the AK is it's ergonomics.

Eh, a SWIFT lever cures most of the problem I have with an AK. Lets you flip off the safety with your index finger without removing your hand from the grip.

And a reach-under for the charging handle works well.

And you can wack the mag release lever with the incoming magazine to get it out of the way.

I like the AK. Caveman simple.

The only serious deficiency of the AK platform IMO are the poor sights. There are a lot of little things that could be better, (safety, charging handle, mag changes, no LRBHO), but with practice you can to deal with all of them and not be at any serious disadvantage. It takes significantly more work to get good with an AK than it does with an AR though.

The AK is an excellent weapon, as is the AR. You can't try to run them both the same though. You don't drive a Porsche like an F250.

The simplicity of the AK allows for a versatile selection of operating methods. There isn't one right way to run it. The best thing is to spend as many hours as possible with your chosen rifle and find what methods work for you.

I used to think the open sights were a major drawback, but have found they work fine in practice. There have been more than a few rifles, for battle or otherwise, that have survived the test of time without a set of peeps.

In general, I'm not a fan of slapping as many aftermarket parts onto the AK as possible to try and make it run like an AR. Just get an AR, or a Sig, if that's what you're after. The AK may appear incredibly crude, but it's not sloppy or loose, it just has more forgiving clearances. The things that seem like drawbacks were intended, not flaws.

I agree the AK is excellent firearm. The ergonomics can also be easily upgraded to suit your needs. With so many accessories available you can easily fix the safty, mag catch, sights, stocks, muzzle brea etc...the basic design is a tank and it shoots straight enough for government work!

The owner of Tech-Sights has recently posted here that he is coming out with a rear-mounted peep sight for the AK. Sometime in the spring. Apparently it is not mounted to the cover. I love the Tech-Sight on my SKS, so I am looking fowrard to this.

That guy seems to have a little weight built up on him, but he's definitely got some experience with that weapon that more than makes up for it. If he can shoot as well as he mounts the weapon, I'd definitely take him over two or three 18 year olds out of basic. Cool video.

I will defer to Mr. Jackson (http://members.cox.net/gary.jeter/ak47.wav) as to the utility and technique of the Kalashnikov rifle.

*drool* That will be really cool to see. There are also a couple rails I've seen advertised that would to the rear sight and rear trunnion, so they're both stable and very low to the gun. But on a per-dollar basis, I don't think you could beat an AK with Tech-Sights for a basic EBR.
