My CMP Winchester M1 Garand receiver arrived yesterday!

Note the letter 'A' engraved after the serial number in the first photo below. To learn what this is all about and what makes the "Win-13" receiver variation so interesting, check out this article:

http://www.jouster.com/articles30m1/win13.html

Below I've embedded links to photos I took tonight. I'm especially interested to learn why:

LEAD
10-65

...is written on the side of the receiver in pencil. Maybe this was done at the CMP? Or perhaps back in 1965? What does 'LEAD' mean? Hrm.

High-res images are provided for collectors interested in markings, etc. They are about 1.6 megs each. Any information on making a correct restoration would be appreciated.

Christmas came in July! I am extremely excited to source parts for this project. Call me nuts, but I want to go for a full, 'correct' restoration... with a new stock, perhaps... for hitting the range with a tight fit.

Sven,

Congrats on the beginning step for the fine hobby of "Winny Scrounging".... i.e. trying to locate all the parts to build up a complete Winchester M1.

Re "LEAD 10-65"

The rifle to which that receiver was originally attached was arsenal rebuilt at "Letterkenny Explosive & Ammunition Depot" in October of '65. Your receiver has the same silvery gray re-parked finish that is very typical of Letterkenny rebuilt rifles.

I wonder why the rest of this rifle was scrapped after having gone through a rebuild so late in the M1's usage period..... Most of the LEAD rebuilds coming out of the CMP's warehouse are in primo condition.

Some GI somewhere musta' dropped this one under a tank tread and the barrel, op-rod, gas cylinder & wood were all "waffleized".... ;) The receiver was all they could save.

Oh well,.... congrats.

I, too have a WIN-13 from the CMP by way of the original recipient. I think it was shipped in the days before they really paid much attention to the "collector" spec's ('89). Mine arrived with all correct WRA late-production parts except the stock. If I can ever find a WRA/GHD stock in good shape for less than $600, I'll have a complete Winnie as it might have left the factory in April of '45.

Are you going to build it up as a correct -13? My gracious, the stuff's gotten expensive, but I imagine it would be a fun project.

Have fun!

The only wear I can detect is indicated in these two photos. Looks like the bolt was slamming the receiver here - anyone know if this will affect accuracy?

In the one photo, you can see how the receiver has 'peened' a bit from the action of the bolt. In the other, you can see a small 'notch' across the gap, sort of a wear mark in the steel.

Any ideas? Maybe it has something to do with the way it was destroyed originally?

Plan is to have MilTech Arms (http://www.miltecharms.com) rebuild this Garand, but only after I conclude what could be a long parts search... esp. if looking for parts that went through the same Letterkenny rebuild.

 ;)

This is where the fun starts. The hunt.
