Hello everyone. I got to shoot a crossbow today and really enjoyed, so I was thinking about getting one just for fun. I will not be hunting anything with it, but would like a decent quality bow. I would like to stay under $200 seeing as this will just be for fun.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: I like the Barnett RC-150, after looking over a few of them. Any opinions about it?

If it's got Barnett's name on it you'll be okay. Trust me on this one..

There have been several complaints from Barnett owners at my club that the rail upon which the scope is mounted is prone to movement and/or failure to last. I don't own a Barnett but I have used the club's Barnett. If I was in your position I would try to get a Horton or Ten Point instead. But $200 is quite low for a crossbow that will last and will be reasonably accurate.

I'vd never heard of that problem before. Maybe they put out a bad batch. I owned a Barnett several years ago. Believe it was called a 300. Anyway it was the fastest production crossbow around at the time. Ordered it from Cabela's. Horton make's a good one. I remember I agonized for a couple of weeks over which one to buy. I had to use the cocking device with mine. Without it I could sit on my ass and strain my guts out and I couldn't do it. I had excellent results with mine. When my Grand Nephew turned 14 I gave it to him for Christmas. Buy as you see fit I guess, but I will still ssay if Barnett stamped their name on it you'll be okay..Okay...

Bear has a good name too. Never had my hands on one. But there are people who hunt and kill bear with a bear bow. Is that thing a compound? (breakover)

I'd be much more inclined to get a recurve or a compound, for cheaper, and spend the money saved on a nice pin sight.

Sure beats pissing on a scope rail out in the woods..

heck, bear makes really nice recurves.

Well, shot the bow today. After a frustrating first twenty minutes of missing my my 24" by 24" target I went inside and read how to aim a recurve bow and was able to put 60% of my shots after in the target. (and putting wax on my finger guard)

I would like to second Odd Job's advice. $200 is insufficient to purchase a new crossbow that is both accurate and durable. Now, you can purchase much better crossbows than any Barnett, but be prepared to pay for it. There are no free lunches.

If you are new to crossbow shooting, please watch where you place your fingers on the stock. No doubt, this is old advice, but it certainly bears repeating. A modern crossbow can generate enormous force, enough to severely injure your fingertips. Play it safe. Otherwise, enjoy yourself.
