Tell me about the 11-87 SP super mag

What are the major beefs with the 11-87? From what I can tell, a lot of folks don’t think very highly of them. I am shopping for a 3.5” mag semi-auto shotgun and the Remington SP Super Magnum feels/fits me great, but I am a little concerned about its reputation. I am considering it for my primary waterfowl gun.
Comments for and against are much appreciated.

Problem is, Dooley, they're iffy on quality control. I've shot a couple that worked just fine, and a couple that gave endless trouble. I know three waterfowl hunters round here who swear by theirs, and four others who swear at them - and the latter either have changed, or are in the process of changing, to the Winchester Super X2. That shotgun seems to have a "bulletproof" reputation as far as quality control and reliability is concerned. I don't own either gun - I don't own a 3½" Magnum gun at all, as I value my shoulder! :D - but based on field reports from Louisiana shooters, your problem will be getting one of the good 11-87's, not a lemon. YMMV.

The 11-87 Supermag is one of the only shotguns I have not brought home to try. I have seen 4 of them shot, 3 of those were in the fields. Every one of them jammed at least one time. 3 of them jammed repeatedly with Remington 3.5" steel shot, and friend that is just absurd. In a word I would describe them as "junk". The standard 11-87 is iffy on quality with some good ones and some bad ones, but the Supermag is an abortion that should have never happened. Remington needs to go back to a clean sheet of paper and start over to have a prayer of competing in todays shotgun market. It is such a shame that the Remington heritage is wasted, the 1100 is one of the all time great shotguns made.
Try the SuperX2, and the Browning Gold. I have owned both and although I like the X2 better the Gold was a darn fine shotgun too. The Beretta Xtrema should have its issues worked out by now also and would be worth a look. I had a Super Black Eagle Benelli too and I did not like it, but I know dozens of guys that swear by them.
IMO the SuperX2 is the finest 3.5" shotgun on the market.

ditto- I saw an 1100 trap gun crack a reciever tonight
bought new in 1975 and fed an honest best guess 1 Million rounds. has been rebuilt, rebarrelled, reblued more than once.
(verticle crack left side of reciever near the front)
IMO the SuperX2 is the finest 3.5" shotgun on the market.
ditto again
I never owned an 11-87 SuperMag but I spent some time in a duck/goose blind with a fellow swearing a blue streak at one. total krap and frustration.
I own an SX2 which has functioned flawlessly since, and including, round "one"

Thanks for the info., I will continue my search for my new gun. It is a shame, the 1187 is fine looking and fits me well. However, I wont buy it if it has troubles.
I have owned an auto5 and hunted for just about everything with it for almost 20 years. I am looking for another gun that will be just as realiable. I joked with my wife that the reason I am getting a new gun is it that can be passed to my son someday and that I want to be buried with the browning...she didnt think it was as funny as I did.
Thanks for the insight.
