After getting bumped from my favorite spot for this year's rifle season I was pretty bummed out. On the Wednesday before rifle season began I spent all morning scouting a new area of the lease I was totally unfamiliar with and managed to find enough sign to get my hopes up off the floor.
Opening day found me in the spot I had scouted but I only saw three does. With the wind howling I knew I could move quietly through the woods, so I took off still hunting/scouting. Walked up on another 4 does and a buck over a two hour period. Had a new game plan for that night.
After giving up on the Hogs at halftime I went into my tweaked spot and got to see a doe, a forkhorn chasing a doe, and a small 8 chasing a doe. What I discovered was that I still didn't have the stand location nailed down just right.
Went to church on Sunday, but Monday morning was right back at it in what I knew had to be the right spot. NOTHING shows up until 8:45. Actually at 8:40 I heard a buck grunting but with the wind, I couldn't tell where in the world he was. Just two or three minutes later here comes a pile of 4 does up the hill all doing the look over the shoulder thing. I got the gun up and sure enough here he came with head down and nose sniffing in overtime.
Took a few minutes to get a good shot, but finally at 75 yrds. or so he gave me what I wanted and I took him. For me it is a really quality deer that I am so proud of. Esp. after spending the time to determine exactly where I needed to be. Feel like I beat him at his own game and that is very satisfying!
Took a doe with my bow early, a 14pt. with the smoke-pole and now this one with the 7mag. Makes for a fun and full year.
