Bloodshot Meat

All my hunting life, I've encountered the two (or more) sides of the argument about the damaged tissue around the bullet path.
Some cut a mound of meat off the carcass the size of a watermelon and throw it in the trash because they are deathly afraid of what lies within.:barf:
Others wash it off, pull out the bone and bullet fragments and send it to the freezer.:D
I read articles about soaking it in salt water to save it, and other writings command us to get rid of it before something terrible happens.:banghead:

What is bloodshot meat, to you?
Is it edible? Any of it?

I don't like waste but my motto is "when in doubt- throw it out".
It doesn't bother me to clean it up and usually you're not really losing much more than a handfull. It might look a little yucky but no danger from eating it.
toss it in with the trim and run it thru the grinder. if its all pulverized snotty and full of bone splinters thats different.
shoot em thru the ribs or in the head and save all the meat.

Helps to place bruised or bloody meat in a large stainless bowl for a day or two in a fridge before grinding. Much of the blood will drain and be in the bottom of the bowl.

I cut it away and throw it in the scrap bucket. None of it actually goes to waste as my akitas love it.
I might take a different approach if I don't take home a lot of meat, and say, what I do take home is a shot up hind quarter. Luckily, that hasn't happened yet.

I don't feed my dog tenderloin so I don't kn ow the comparison. I make sure there is no bone and bullet fragments and grind it up.

Most of the time I just cut the area free and leave it with the gut pile.
On small critters like squirrels, rabbits, quali and such I wash the carcass out well with clean water and let them soak overnight in a bowl of salted water.
This removes almost all the blood soak and cuts a lot of the "Gamey" flavor out of the meat.
We also like to marinate wild meat before cooking and this makes for some darn good eating.

don't shoot the shoulders out and you won't waste much. Put the bullet/arrow in the ribs and at most you waste a rib or two, no big deal
