Recently got a 1979 Security Six in stainless. Well taken care of, and shot little.

Only thing is.....the dreaded billboard. It has got to go.

Did my first gunsmithing project (I dont count AR builds as gunsmithing)

All by hand, no power tools. I thought a lil how to might make a good read.

Started off with 100 grit sand paper. Sanded until letters were faint. Do not go back and forth. Small circles. This is so there is no perceptual "edge" by feel or sight.
Time taken: 4 hours (2 nights watching TV)

Repeat with 360 grit for 2 more hours. Reduce pressure of sandpaper towards the end.

Repeat with 1000 grit reducing pressure as you go. (About 30 min)

Finish with 2000 grit reducing pressure as you go. (another 30 min)

You cannot tell it was ever there, or that any work has been done.

I just happen to buy some polishing compound thinking I would need it. So I started polishing the cylinder minus the flutes to a mirror finish. While leaving the flutes matte or brushed.

The only thing that I will do different next time is the following:
Dont try to sand the entire billboard. The center will sand out long before the corners. I would try to concentrate on the corners and the center will come out on its own.

All the text that is roll marked on the side of the barrel. Usually something about where the gun was made, and that the used ought to read the instruction manuel lest he be a dumb-ass and blow himself up.

The marks you see in the barrel are reflections of the grass.

Couple of tips:
Next time, draw-file the markings out, then use the sandpaper to finish getting the file tracks out.

Back the paper with something flat, like the file you used, and the center won't get dished out from finger pressure on the paper alone.

My 1974 (150-prefix) model doesn't have the warning billboard, just Ruger and Southport, Conn.

My father's 1979 model has it and it doesn't bother either of us.

Looks like a nice job you did though!

I got mine out much easier. I used Photoshop!

Seriously, I left mine on. No telling if I ever get stuck out in the wilderness and need something to read.

It's going to be a shame when the next administration melts it down to make a mancover! I saw a video once of South Africa destroying a nice stainless Colt Python. It was a very emotional ordeal.
