I was wandering if anyone could point me in the direction of a site that has instructions for field stripping an AK 47. The book that came with my SAR 1 is useless. Thanks

If you have an SAR-1, then this is the site for you:

http://www.ak-47.net/index.htm

This site is more specific to the Romanian versions such as yours:

http://linx310.nothingbutguns.com

The second link has specifics and pictures detailing many things you can do to your SAR. Hope that helps.

How do you like your SAR-1? I am thinking of getting one before the price goes over 300 bucks.

Don't mean to intrude but I just bought an SAR-1 a couple of weeks ago. The gun seems to be better than expected. I have no trigger slap as others have mentioned. The furniture matches. There are a few "marks" and very minor scratches on the metal but nothing serious.

A friend at the range saw it, loved it, and bought one yesterday. (His looks slightly better than mine.)

It is FUN to shoot! ONLY problem I have had is that I bought 2 magazines (30-round) for it... one is a bit tight and the other is slightly
"loose". The 10-round mag that came with it fits perfectly. -Not really a gun problem.

Be sure to check for canted sights and gas block just in case. Buy local if possible so you can inspect the weapon.

I was going to buy a SAM-7 but could not afford $600 right now. (They are beautiful guns!) - One of the "beauties" of the SAR-1s is that you can shoot it, throw it in the trunk and not worry about a little scratch or nic!

Do you need a manual to strip an AK? Just unload it and push that little knob at the back of the receiver cover. All will instantly become apparent. Two year old kids in the Congo do it all the time.

Thanks for the advice Cosmoline, I realize that now, but I don't have much of a mechanical mind, I have this problem of getting something apart and no being able to get it back together again.

Well, after reading this I just stopped by FAC and got myself one of the 2003 SAR-1's with the laminated stock. Gas block and front sight are both perfectly straight. I also got 3 Belgian black polymer waffle magazines that fit nice with no wiggle at all. Out the door was less than $420.00 with teh 3 extra magazines (the rifle comes with one 5-round steel mag, one 40 round steel mag, cleaning kit, and sling) since I drove right over to FAC and picked it up there was no transfer fee, just a $10.00 handling fee at FAC. :D I am also impressed with the rifle's appearance, the pistol grip is black plastic and the buttstock and the forearm actually match and the metal looks better than I expected with only a few machining marks.

There really isn't that much to an AK.
Perhaps we could walk you through it.
The only difficult thing, if you would really call it difficult, is getting the reciever cover back on.
As cosmoline said, just push the button.

Not to be a nitpicker or anything but the waffle mags are Bulgarian....not Belgian.

Good luck with your new rifle. :)

The lever for removing the gas tube/top handguard is often VERY stiff in a new gun.

Putting the top cover back on:
Line up the front of the top cover so it's pointed into the groove.
Hold it in place with the thumb of one hand.
With the other hand, slap the back of the top cover down and forward.
It will pop neatly into place.

Don't be shy, you're not going to hurt it--besides AKs like to be smacked around. ;)

Yep, and AKs won't bite you like a Garand will either.

That is sort of what I do.
I have realized lately that I need another AK.
Anything that the government doesn't want me to have that much is worth having two or three.
