I know Remington used to make a 40? model match rifle in 308 with a charger clip slot for national match shooting. Do they still make one or does anyone still make a bolt target rifle in 308 with a charger clip slot. If there isn't one in production which is easiest to find used and where is a good source. My experience years ago was building up from a military action can be as expensive as buying or more. I can't even find an after market target stock for a military bolt action.

Yes they make a 40XC with stripper clip slot:
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/custom_shop/40-x/model_40-XC_KS.asp

Winchesters can be cut out for a clip slot. Its' just like a 98 mauser. Also bolt on stripper clip guides can be had for Rems and Wins.

I would not mess around with a military action for the reasons you stated. A good place to look for and ask about possible guns for sale is www.nationalmatch.us You have to sign up to access but it is free and most all of the people there are real highpower shooters.

Finding an old bolt XC gun shouldn't be a problem. I know of a trued M70 with an Anschutz trigger that is in great shape for sale for about $600.

I think most of the better gunsmiths can machine almost any action to take stripper clips. I saw a Savage done that way once.
