Shotgun action release question

Will the action release button on a Mossberg allow you to push it in only when the shotgun is in firing mode?

In other words, I just got a Mossberg 500. It is loaded, but no shell is chambered. This morning I noticed that the action release lever was "stuck" and I couldn't cycle the gun. I didn't want to check after I chambered a round, because if it was stuck, my only option would be to fire it. But I was not sure if that is how the action release functions. Maybe it only allows me to depress it when the gun has been cocked.

Help a shotgun newbie please.

Yes It will only allow you to push it when the internal hammer is cocked.

Thanks Max. I live in a very residential area, so me going outside to "test" it are not happening. But just wanted to make sure everything was working properly.

So when I cycle the shotgun, the action release button will "pop" out to be used if I choose?

Yes if it is in good working order it will pop out when you cycle the action. When the trigger is pulled it stays in. I read your post wrong the first time that is why I changed my post.

The action release lever can be pushed in to release the action only when the action is locked. The action can be locked only when the hammer is in the cocked position. However, having the hammer in the cocked position does not necessarily mean that the action is locked. The hammer can be cocked and the action be in the unlocked position.
